Age proves nothing as NYC ranks the energy use of large commercial buildings

Dec. 27, 2012

Dive summary:

  • Reducing the carbon footprint in mass-transit-heavy New York City is about building energy efficiency, not about cars, and the city is finding that not everything works out like it was expected to.
  • A law requires owners of large commercial buildings to report their energy use and makes the information public, and a report from the city shows that the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings, with scores of 80 and 84, respectively, under the EPA's Energy Star system were ahead of the LEED-Gold 7 World Trade Center at 74.
  • Large residential buildings come under the energy-reporting law in 2013, and the effects of the storm named Sandy have heightened everyone's attention in New York City to global climate change.

From the article:

Unlike cities that depend heavily on automobiles, New York racks up most of its carbon dioxide emissions ? nearly 80% ? in heating and cooling buildings. ....

Articles From The World: Day Trading or Investing for the Long Haul?

Summary:
Among those who buy and sell stocks there is an ongoing debate about whether the most profitable approach to stock market trading is short or long term investment.

Keywords:

Article Body:
Among those who buy and sell stocks there is an ongoing debate about whether the most profitable approach to stock market trading is short or long term investment. And the two sides rarely reach agreement, because one side is rather conservative in its approach, whereas the other has a more radical and freewheeling attitude. Day traders are usually considered the mavericks of the trading world, and they are known for taking gambler?s risks and making huge profits in short amounts of time ? sometimes buying and selling the same stock several times in a single day. Those who prefer to buy and hold their stocks follow a more risk-averse path, and cite historical trends to back up their claim that their method is actually more reliable and is the real shortcut to wealth.

Most investors can enjoy the best of both worlds, by setting aside some of their money for day trades, and the balance of it for longer-term investment. Because day trading tends to be more volatile, and can result in quick profits or fast losses, most of us would be advised to put only as much of our investment capital as we can comfortably afford to lose, into this kind of trading strategy. That way, even if you encounter a worse case scenario, it will not adversely impact your overall financial situation.

There are pros and cons to both styles of investing. Those who do day trades enjoy the fact that they can get in and out of the market quickly, and make money without waiting for the results. But any kind of stock market investment strategy requires research into the companies you decide to invest in, and research can take time to do. If you are buying and selling so fast that you don?t have time to do adequate background analysis, day trading may not be a prudent approach.

Investing in companies that provide slow but steady returns is a time-tested approach to the stock market. In fact, most historical evidence supports the idea that if you buy quality stocks and hold them for long periods of time ? at least five years or more ? you will do very well in the stock market. For that reason, those who are young enough to have time on their side would probably be wise to buy some stocks and sock them away for retirement.

With most investments, it is usually best to diversify to minimize risk and maximize potential gains. One way to accomplish this in the stock market is to employ both strategies, and use a portion of your investment capital for short-term trades, while leaving another portion in long term investments. If one basket of investments doesn?t do well, the other probably will. And if both do well, you will enjoy twice as much success.

Deportivo sack head coach Oltra with side sitting bottom of La Liga

Deportivo La Coruna?s president has confirmed that the club have sacked coach Jose Luis Oltra over an ?irreversible? run of form.

The Spanish side sit rock-bottom of La Liga with 12 points from 17 matches, though just three points off the tip of the relegation zone.

The former Tenerife boss guided Deportivo back to the top flight in the 2011-12 season but has struggled to string victories together this campaign, and Augusto Cesar Lendoiro insisted that change is necessary.

"It's a decision that didn't come today, it was taken before the assembly following the defeat against Espanyol [on December 20]," the president told reporters at a press conference on Sunday.

"The situation became irreversible. We're not fans of changing the coach, but a shake-up was needed that had to come from this, because you don't have other options to make changes in the team."

Michigan Becomes Latest State To Protect Citizens From Employers And Schools Snooping On Private Social Feeds

tumblr_lgoz9xfvgW1qa7nyeEmployers and schools in Michigan, the greatest state in the Nation, are now prohibited from asking employees and students for passwords to their personal email and social media accounts. In a win for reasonable privacy and common sense, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder just signed House Bill 5523 into law introduced by state Rep. Aric Nesbitt, R-Lawton. “Cyber security is important to the reinvention of Michigan, and protecting the private internet accounts of residents is a part of that,” Snyder said in a released statement on 12/28/2012. “Potential employees and students should be judged on their skills and abilities, not private online activity.” The bill also protects job and school applicants from having to give out their passwords. Offenders to the new law could be charged with a misdemeanor and charged up to a $1,000 fine. Bills such as these are in response to a troubling trend that surfaced in 2012. Employers and schools were found asking current and prospective employees and students for access to their online accounts. This was often labeled as voluntary but not complying often had negative effects. Earlier this year, the United States House of Representatives failed in an attempt to ratify a Federal ban, paving the way for states to take up the responsibility. California, Delaware, Illinois, and New Jersey have similar laws on the books. But remember, there’s a difference between private and personal, and anything you put online will never be completely private — right, Randi? [image via mittenmade]

Pearson buys a small stake in Nook Media, wants a fast track for educational ebooks

Publishers often want to work closely with e-book outlets -- possibly a little too closely -- but it's rare that they involve themselves directly. Pearson is taking that uncommon step by making a 5 percent, $89.5 million investment in Nook Media, the joint venture between Barnes & Noble and Microsoft. Some of the reasoning won't be made public until Barnes & Noble provides holiday sales results on January 3rd, but Pearson is clear that it's furthering its online education plans: it wants Nook Media's distribution skills to make a "seamless and effective experience for students." Just when we'll see this harmony is still up in the air, though. Nook Media has yet to outline what Microsoft's partnership means for e-books and e-readers, let alone how Pearson factors in. We're not expecting a sea change until companies start speaking up.

Scott Steinberg: Change Management 101: How Businesses Win ...

Among the most frequently-cited topics in the business world today is strategic innovation. Leaders and managers often wonder how to deal with change management since the world is constantly in flux and everything is changing at a brisk pace ? including markets, best practices and customer expectations. The challenge: It often seems that as soon as we wrap our heads around one new idea, it changes shape, or something completely new comes down the creek and we?re left reeling. So how can we as management executives and leaders possibly stay ahead of the curve in a world, and commercial marketplace, that moves this quickly?

Fortunately, there?s no need for crystal balls, tarot cards, or cloying incense. The irony is that most any enterprise can see where trends are headed long before they come down the pike: The trick is rather to have the good sense to step aside so you don?t get run over by them. Start by implementing processes, platforms and people-centric solutions that allow you to stay abreast of rising trends and topics, then proactively develop, implement and test new methodologies, products and services to address these emerging areas of concern. From there, observe the responses prompted by these solutions and react, iterating accordingly as you go. That makes it a bit easier to adapt. Ultimately, it pays to be proactive: It?s wiser to stock a fire extinguisher on-hand before the roof catches flame then finding yourself having to sprint for one while the house is burning down around you.

While such observations may sound trite, the challenge is that successfully addressing and adapting to strategic innovation requires implementing a culture of participation ? not necessarily the type of culture built into most Industrial Age organizations. But it?s key to remember that executives, managers and front line employees alike seldom have trouble spotting emerging innovations. More often, troubles surround their ability to successfully communicate these opportunities and challenges to upper management, and obtain the organizational buy-in needed to quickly and concisely respond to these potential hazards. As a business leader, to succeed, it?s important to think of change management as an ongoing, not occasional, activity that should be ingrained in any enterprise from day one. Organization-wide, you need to open yourself up to the possibility of change instead of steeling yourself against it, and both flatten lines of communication and optimize leadership, decision-making and action-based hierarchy to allow for flexible and powerful responses to rising areas of concern.

Important to keep in mind: The market, and industry, is constantly moving around us. Many leaders harbor an inherent fear of or resistance to change, partially because we?re afraid that the move we make might not be the right one. However, if we want to succeed, it?s vital to note that freezing up is not an option ? if the path is constantly shifting in front of us, doing so is tantamount to hitting cruise control while steering headlong off the road. Think of running your business like playing a game of football: Yards will be gained, yards will be lost, and you?ll often get clobbered ? all that matters is moving the ball down field in the aggregate. Strategic innovation requires that you constantly be trying, failing and learning from mistakes ? market-leading products, services and organizations are seldom born fully matured. All develop over time, as further experience, information and insight is gained, allowing us to make better and more informed choices.

The key here: Decision makers need to make decisions, even if they don?t have perfect information. Even the most successful organizations and managers in the world are never 100 percent sure how outcomes will play out ? and sometimes, they?re even aware that first attempts may well be disastrous. As Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz famously stated, ?No good plan survives first contact with the enemy.? In other words, the second that you hit the battlefield, every variable can change. So to succeed, you need to be prepared to meet those potential changes, and respond in kind. To this extent, you need to experiment, prototype, gain hands-on learning and ? whether speaking from an organizational or personal level ? constantly be striving to acquire the experience, skills, contacts, insights and connections that will help diversify and strengthen your outlook as a result of each successive attempt. So long as you?re doing so strategically and in measured, cost-effective fashion with an eye towards eventual success, short-term failure can actually pave the way to success. In the same way that early prototype versions of high-tech products lead to polished end products, so too can nascent leadership strategies and approaches eventually grow into powerful ways of addressing developing topics and trends.

From a broad level, it pays to encourage employees to speak up and contribute, open channels of communication, and create incubators within any given organization. Make sure that leaders at all levels can communicate with one another and share ideas. Keep up with emerging trends, and once you have a better idea of what?s coming down the pike, you can prototype with new strategies, new products, and new processes designed to piggyback on or steer safely clear of them. And ultimately, keep your organization?s end goals in mind ? you can lose individual battles, but still win the war. Don?t be afraid of failures, as long as they?re measured, strategic, and cost-effective ? after all, said failures are the best way to learn. Apple?s iPod didn?t spring from the blueprints and off the assembly belt in one smooth motion: Countless experimentation and mistakes were involved before the company got the design right.

As a leader, give yourself permission to speak up, try and do, and give others within your organization permission to do so, too. Don?t allow employees to keep quiet, or keep their heads down ? encourage their contributions and insights. And when all?s said and done with an initiative, don?t worry if it isn?t perfect ? instead, ship your product or venture and see what happens, iterating as you go. Vital to recall: It pays to have back-up plans, keep experimenting new approaches, and leave yourself enough headroom to maneuver as new feedback and information is gained. You don?t need an industry prophet, fortune teller or high-powered management consultant to realize the secret: Constant motion and flexibility are how you stay ahead of the curve.

Lisa Murkowski, Ron Wyden Propose Campaign Finance Reform

  • Sheldon Adelson And Family (R)

Sheldon Adelson, the Las Vegas casino magnate, and his family have combined to give $53.69 million to super PACs in the 2012 election cycle. At first, Adelson pumped money into Winning Our Future, the super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich, but now he is funding groups backing Mitt Romney and congressional Republicans. Adelson is ranked on the Forbes list of the richest Americans at number eight, with $21.5 billion in net worth. Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam, gave $15 million to Winning Our Future. His daughters Sivan Ochshorn and Shelley Maye Adelson each chipped in $500,000. Another daughter and her husband each gave $250,000. Adelson and his wife have also given $20 million to Restore Our Future (supporting Romney), $5 million to Congressional Leadership Fund, $5 million to YG Action Fund, $2 million to Freedom PAC (supporting Connie Mack), $1.5 million to Independence Virginia PAC (supporting George Allen), $1 million to Ending Spending Action Fund, $1 million to Treasure Coast Jobs Coalition, $1 million to Patriot Prosperity PAC (supporting Shmuley Boteach for Congress) and $250,000 to Conservative Renewal PAC, $250,000 to Texas Conservatives Fund (both supporting David Dewhurst) and $190,000 to Hispanic Leadership Fund. He has allegedly given in excess of $70 million when contributions to non-profit groups like Americans for Prosperity and the Republican Jewish Coalition are included. His involvement in politics revolves around his support for the state of Israel, in particular the policies of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His business, along with that of other super PAC donors, is also under investigation for violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

Annette Simmons gave $1.2 million to Red White And Blue Fund (supporting Rick Santorum). Simmons has also given $1.1 million to Texas Conservatives Fund and $500,000 to Conservative Renewal PAC, both super PACs supporting Senate candidate David Dewhurst. He gave another $50,000 to Strong Utah PAC, $10,000 to Conservatives Action Together and $5,000 to Freedom PAC, which supports Connie Mack for Senate in Florida. Simmons -- who explained that he is contributing money to super PACs to stop "that socialist," President Barack Obama -- remains in second place among super PAC donors.

  • Bob Perry (R)

Texas homebuilder Bob Perry contributed $21,465,000 million to super PACs. Perry is one of the most prolific donors in contemporary political history. He was a major backer of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the outside group that helped torpedo John Kerry's presidential campaign in 2004. Perry's net worth has been estimated at around $650 million. Perry has given $10 million to Restore Our Future (supporting Romney), $7.5 million to American Crossroads, $1 million to Congressional Leadership Fund, $1 million to Club for Growth Action, $750,000 to Independence Virginia (supporting George Allen), $500,000 to Texas Conservatives Fund (supporting David Dewhurst), $250,000 to Freedom PAC, $100,000 to Make Us Great Again (supporting Rick Perry, who is of no relation) and $15,000 to Maverick PAC.

Ricketts has also given $500,000 the Campaign for Primary Accountability, a super PAC supporting challengers to incumbent Democrats and Republicans in contested congressional primary elections, and $100,000 to Restore Our Future (supporting Romney). Ricketts became the focus of controversy in May 2012 after the New York Times revealed that he was considering a proposal to fund, through a super PAC, advertisements attacking President Barack Obama with his relationship with his former pastor, the controversial Jeremiah Wright. After the publicity Ricketts and the consultants involved all stated that they were not going forward with the plan.

    The Wallpaper Wednesday Desktop

The Wallpaper Wednesday Desktop Sometimes the combination of tools that make a featured desktop good-looking and useful aren't a ton of widgets all over the screen, just smart placement of a few and a couple of customization tools that make us think "that'd be really cool on my system." When reader AzraeL36 submitted his desktop to the Featured Desktop forum using one of our own Wallpaper Wednesday wallpapers, we took notice.

Want the same look for your desktop? AzraeL36 was light on details, but we managed to figure out what he used to make his Windows desktop look like this. Here's what you need:

    • The Sky Mountain Wallpaper from our Wallpaper Wednesday post
    • The Rainmeter system configuration and management utility for Windows
    • The Encoded skin for the time, date, and weather
    • The GoogleBar utility for Rainmeter to add a Google search bar directly to the desktop
    • The SimpleSentenceThree skin for Rainmeter for the sunrise/sunset times and the Now Playing widget in the bottom left corner
    • Stardock's ObjectDock for the dock on the right side of the screen
    • Winamp minimized at the top of the screen

There are obviously a few missing pieces, notably where AzraeL36 got the icons for the dock on the side, but if you have questions about how to make this setup your own, head into the original thread to ask your questions. Of course, if Rainmeter gives you trouble, our guide can help with that.

Want to get your desktop featured? Submit it?along with where you got the wallpaper, skins, and geeklets?to us for review. We have two different ways you can share it with us:

Linux, Mac, Windows, whatever you choose to use, please include a description of how you made your desktop when you send it in. Without that, we can't tell others how to make it for themselves so they can be featured too!

Christopher Federline Claims He Fathered Britney's Son

Britney Spears isn't finishing the year on a heartwarming note. The X Factor judge may have divorced Kevin Federline in 2006, but she's still dealing with the fallout of that marriage. Kevin's older brother Christopher Federline is seeking a restraining order against his former sister-in-law and is calling Spears a "maniac."

Brawl in the Family is home for the holidays - Destructoid

As Christmas wraps up and MAGFest fast approaches, we celebrate the Yuletide season with the gift of song.

The previous four strips of Matthew Taranto's Brawl in the Family (454, 455, 456, and 457) have seen Dedede, Pok?mon's Bug Catcher, Ganondorf, and Luigi traveling to adjoining universes for their holiday vacations. My favorite was Luigi's trip to Hyrule, where he successfully supplanted Link as the Hero of Time, but they were all charming as BitF comics tend to be.

For episode 458 (mistakenly numbered 358), Matthew pulled another musical number out of his magic bag of tricks. He and his wife Sarah sang a lovely rendition of the holiday classic "Home for the Holidays" as all the Nintendo vacationers returned from their journeys abroad. Very touching!

I also suppose this is as good a time as any to remind you that Matt is one of the team members on the upcoming Nintendo Force magazine! Hurray for him! And hurray for all of us for being along for the ride! Merry Christmas, duders!

Adolphe Bizwinayo left Rwanda as a refugee and says his new city, Dayton, Ohio, helped him transition to American life with initiatives like the Dayton World Soccer Games.

If there's one common language that some recent immigrants in Dayton, Ohio, seem to share, it's soccer.

The first Dayton World Soccer Games kicked off earlier this year, an initiative hosted by the city to welcome an influx of immigrants. On the field, a rainbow of brightly colored jerseys represented nearly 20 of the different immigrant communities in the city.

"I've been really surprised to see that there's a lot of soccer going on in Dayton," says Adolphe Bizwinayo, who left Rwanda as a refugee.

The sport, he says, has been instrumental in his transition to the unfamiliar city.

"It just brings this joy, like we are home ... like how we used to play soccer back at home when we would play for hours and hours," Bizwinayo says.

That kind of response is exactly why the city launched Welcome Dayton last year ? a strategy to help immigrants ease into American life. City Manager Tim Riordan credits two reasons for the adopted framework: It was the right thing to do, he says, and immigrants were needed to help restore the battered city's economy.

"I saw immigrants doing things in the neighborhoods," Riordan says. "They were buying really inexpensive houses and fixing them up. I heard stories from hardware owners where the immigrants would come and buy one window at a time to fix up their house as they got money."

    An Investment In The Community

Riordan says changing Dayton's culture is an investment in the city. One section of the city, for example, is now entirely designated as an immigrant business zone, and police can check immigration statuses only when suspicious of a serious crime.

Audrey Singer, a senior fellow at the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program, says the relationship between cities and immigrants is certainly evolving.

"What's good about the Dayton program is the way that leaders in those communities talk about immigrants and talk about them as a positive force and contributing," she says.

In fact, a Brookings study finds that immigrants are 30 percent more likely to form new businesses than U.S.-born citizens, which is good news for a city like Dayton, which has been bleeding jobs and population for decades.

    Legal Immigrants, That Is

Not everyone, however, is a fan of the city's new approach. Steve Salvi runs the Cleveland-based Ohio Jobs and Justice PAC, a group focused on illegal immigration. He says officials are relying on a naive myth that immigrants will be the saviors of Dayton.

"I think what the city needs to do is focus on helping native residents and make the city a place where people want to come and start a business if they're immigrants or native-born," Salvi says.

One of his largest concerns is that Dayton could become a sanctuary city, a place harboring illegal immigrants.

City Manager Riordan, however, maintains that the term immigrant is not synonymous with illegal. "Frankly, the good people of Dayton didn't have that kind of attitude," he says. "It was the people from outside of Dayton. I got emails from outside Wyoming and Montana telling us what to do, and I was like, 'Eh, that's not your business.' "

The real thrust of the plan focuses on legal immigrants, Riordan adds. For instance, the city wants to help people like Francis Matias, who worked hard to get his Puerto Rican restaurant, Antojitos, off the ground.

"In other states, it's harder. They're following immigrants and they're treated like criminals. Here, it's great," Matias says in his kitchen.

Other cities, however, are now falling into line with Dayton. Tucson, Ariz., and Salt Lake City, for example, are among those also making it official policy to welcome immigrants and help them feel at home.

Christmas brings fear of church bombs in Nigeria

MADALLA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Kneeling over a dusty grave on the outskirts of Nigeria's capital, 16-year old Hope Ehiawaguan says a prayer, lays down flowers and tearfully tells her brother she loves him.

He was one of 44 killed on Christmas Day last year when a member of Islamist sect Boko Haram rammed a car packed with explosives into the gates of St Theresa's Church in Madalla, a satellite town 25 miles from the center of Abuja.

Boko Haram has killed hundreds in its campaign to impose sharia law in northern Nigeria and is the biggest threat to stability in Africa's top oil exporter.

Two other churches were bombed that day and on Christmas Eve 2010 over 40 people were killed in similar attacks.

This Christmas, the police and military are expecting more trouble in the north. They've ordered security to be tightened, people's movement restricted and churches to be guarded.

But such is the commitment to religion in a country with Africa's largest Christian population that millions of people will pack out thousands of churches in the coming days. It is impossible to protect everyone, security experts say.

"I feel safe," Ehiawaguan says with uncertainty, when asked if she will come to church on December 25 this year.

"Not because of security here ... because we have a greater security in heaven," she says, wiping away her tears.

The blast in Madalla killed several people on the street and pulled down the church roof, condemning many of those trapped inside the burning building, including a 7-month old boy.

A plaque listing the names of the members of the church who were killed has been placed above their graves. The twisted metal of the cars destroyed in the blast is still there.

"I only pray to God to give them a heart," Ehiawaguan says, when asked about her brother's killers.

Security experts believe Boko Haram is targeting worshippers to spark a religious conflict in a country of 160 million people split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims.

    SECTARIAN THREAT

The sect has also targeted Mosques in the past and assassinated Imams who have questioned its insurgency. In the group's stronghold in the northeast, where most of its attacks occur, Muslims are equally at threat as Christians.

The fear for many is that more Christmas Day attacks could spark the sort of tit-for-tat sectarian violence between the mostly Muslim north and largely Christian south, which has claimed thousands of lives in the past decade.

"We have always insisted that Christians should not retaliate," said Sam Kraakevik Kujiyat, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Kaduna State, one of the areas worst hit by inter-religious violence in recent years.

"But there is fear ... we know not everyone who says he is a Christian acts like one."

Churches were emptier than usual on Sunday in northern cities of Kano and Kaduna, local residents said.

Despite bolstered security in cities across the north, dual suicide bombers attacked the offices of mobile phone operators India's Airtel and South Africa's MTN in Nigeria's second-largest city Kano on Saturday.

The bombers died but no civilians were killed.

No one took responsibility for the attacks but Boko Haram has targeted phone firms before because they say the companies help the security forces catch their members.

At least 2,800 people have died in fighting in the largely Muslim north since Boko Haram launched an uprising against the government in 2009, watchdog Human Rights Watch says.

Boko Haram has showed since its insurgency intensified more than two years ago that it can find weaknesses in defenses.

"One faction of Boko Haram has made several attempts to provoke violence between Christians and Muslims," said Peter Sharwood Smith, Nigeria head of security firm Drum Cussac.

"Unfortunately, I think it is very possible we may see attacks of this type (Church bombings) again."

Boko Haram is not the only threat in northern Nigeria.

Islamist Group called Ansaru, known to have ties with Boko Haram, has risen in prominence in recent weeks. It claimed an attack on a major police barracks in Abuja last month, where it said hundreds of prisoners were released.

The group said on Saturday that it was behind the kidnapping of a French national last week and it has been labeled a "terrorist group" by Britain.

Cancer Donor Hoax Cost 20-Year-Old His Life, Mom Says

A Washington teenager who died of a rare form of cancer would still be alive today, his family says, had they not fallen victim to a hoax perpetrated by a stranger who promised to send $250,000 to help cover his medical bills.

Thomas Doty, who recently celebrated his 20th birthday, died on Dec. 19 after a three-year battle with osteosarcoma, a bone cancer.

"I honestly 100 percent believe my son would be here if that time had not been wasted," his mother, Tiffany Doty, told ABC New affiliate KOMO-TV in Seattle.

Earlier this year, family friend Johnathan Hillstrand, who is the star of the show "Deadliest Catch," stepped in and made a video. Soon after, the Doty family heard from a generous benefactor who said she was a nurse from Indiana.

Doty said she felt the stranger was "an answer to our prayers," she wrote in a Dec. 7 post on HealThomas.com, recounting the experience. She put the family's fundraising efforts on hold and began making arrangements to get her son to San Diego for costly, but potentially life-saving alternative treatments.

Every day the check went undelivered, precious time in Thomas' fight was lost, Doty said.

The family was met with a barrage of excuses.

"They came in the form of emails, forged Ally Bank statements, certified cashier's checks produced and altered by [the woman] herself, while trying to prove she had sent the $250,000, and countless forms of communications via phone calls, texts, and emails telling us the 'Check was in the mail' and that she would even cover the costs to save our home from the looming foreclosure with Chase Bank," Doty wrote.

After eight weeks of back and forth, it became apparent the strangers' promise was empty. The community rallied around Thomas, helping to raise money to send him to San Diego for treatment.

Despite improvements, the lost time took a toll on the young man, his mother said. He died on Dec. 19.

"She went to great lengths and just broke Thomas' spirit," Doty told KOMO. "Like he needed something ? one more disappointment in his life."

Hillestrand tweeted the news of Thomas' death and thanked everyone who had helped.

"Thomas doty was pure in heart and good!" he wrote. "People like you restore my faith in humanity. I Will miss you my friend."
