Vimeo provides the soundtrack of our lives with new tools

Image

What's Wes Anderson without the Kinks, Pulp Fiction without Dick Dale or Benny Hill without "Yakkity Sax?" Vimeo knows the power of a good soundtrack, so it's adding a couple of tools to its arsenal. The Enhancer lets users choose from some 50,000-plus tracks from the Vimeo Music Store, adding them directly to videos, adjusting audio levels and shifting the beginning and end of the song. A partnership with SmartSound, meanwhile, offers up access to 4,000 songs that can be customized by adjusting length, instrumental mix and musical arrangement. Tracks from the latter service will run $1.99 for non-commercial use and $20 for commercial licenses. Press release after the break.

Umbrella Insurance Coverage ? Worth A Look - MS Estate Planning

[The Wealthy] are more likely to be sued, but excess personal liability insurance doesn't have to cost a fortune.

It's safe to say that, if there's a risk out there, there's also an insurance underwriter somewhere dying to write a policy for it. However, if you are especially affluent or risk-prone, excess personal liability insurance ("umbrella insurance coverage") can be a helpful safeguard.

Any trial attorney will confirm one unshakeable truth - money attracts unwanted attention. Unfortunately, in our litigious society, all it takes is one particularly obstinate person out to "get the rich" to team up with a less-than-scrupulous attorney and make it their mission to ruin your life with a frivolous lawsuit. This was the subject of a recent article in Financial Planning titled "Covering Up."

Not only will you pay for your defense, but juries can also be unfair. In an era of class envy, you may get a jury that wants to help one of its own a "lawsuit lottery" at your expense. To help mitigate the risk of a lawsuit judgment, consider taking out umbrella insurance coverage just in case.

The Quest for the Perfect Office Chair

Although many aesthetically influential office chairs emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, it was a bad time for body-conscious design. Frank Lloyd Wright, for example, crafted a number of impressive chairs, but like other chair-designing architects, he was less interested in matching the chair to the human body than to the surrounding d?cor. In a couple of instances, he did acknowledge human movement. The Larkin Office Building, which he designed in 1904, featured three-legged office chairs for typists. When the typist leaned forward, the chair tilted with her. When complaints emerged about what became known as ?the suicide chair??because of its frightening instability?Wright defended his design, claiming that it forced good posture. (According to Edward Tenner?s book, Our Own Devices, Wright attempted to install the same three-legged chair in the Johnson Wax building in 1939 but received so much resistance that he eventually added front legs.)

'Men In Black' Shoot Down 'Avengers' At Holiday Weekend Box Office

'Avengers' finally forced to #2 after nearly a month at the top.
By Ryan J. Downey

It wasn't Loki, an army of otherworldly Chitauri nor any other super-villain that finally defeated Captain America and his pals. A satiric adaptation of a 1970s soap opera and a big-budget action flick based on a board game tried and failed. Ultimately, it was another franchise with comic book roots that ended the nearly month-long reign of "The Avengers" at the top of the box office, as "Men in Black 3" became the #1 movie in America with an estimated $70 million debut over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.

The third entry in the Will Smith/ Tommy Lee Jones franchise, based on a short-lived comic series from the early 1990s, took in another $133.2 million overseas, giving it a worldwide total of $203.2 million. Box-office prognosticators had predicted a somewhat stronger opening for the 3-D film, which carried a reported production budget near $250 million. Enthusiasm and nostalgia for the 1997 original, about a pair of criminal-alien-busting special agents, remains high. But the 2002 sequel was poorly received by critics, who were a bit kinder to "MIB 3," which added Josh Brolin as a younger version of Jones' character in time-travel scenes. The first "Men in Black" made $589 million around the world. Its follow-up trailed behind with $442 million. The opening weekend for "MIB 3" wasn't far off from "MIB 2."

Will Smith, top-billed in hits like "Hancock" and "I Am Legend," broke a four-year hiatus from the screen with "Men in Black 3." The film received a 67 percent score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

"Chernobyl Diaries" was the only other widely released new film over the holiday weekend. The low-budget horror tale was #6 with just $9.3 million. Critics were not kind — the film had a 26 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes — and audiences who saw the movie assigned it a D-plus CinemaScore.

"Men in Black 3" was able to do what "Dark Shadows" and "Battleship" failed to do in recent weeks by knocking "The Avengers" to #2, though Marvel's superhero team-up flick still generated gigantic numbers considering how long it's been in theaters. "The Avengers" earned another $46.9 million over the four-day weekend (and crossed the $500 million mark on Saturday, making it the fastest movie to ever do so) for a total of $523.6 million. Not adjusted for inflation, "The Avengers" is now the fourth-biggest movie of all time, behind "Avatar," "Titanic" and the final entry in the "Harry Potter" movie franchise.

"Battleship" sunk even further at the box office, dropping 57 percent to #3 after a less-than-impressive debut last weekend. The blend of high-seas action and sci-fi made $13.8 million over the holiday for a domestic total of $47.3 million. "Battleship" has made $232.7 million overseas but has earned even less than Taylor Kitsch's last film, notorious big-budget bomb "John Carter," over the same amount of time in theaters. "The Dictator" was #4 during its second weekend with $11.8 million for a $43.6 million total.

"Dark Shadows" was #5 with $9.4 million for a total of $64.9 million. The latest Johnny Depp/ Tim Burton collaboration won't make anywhere near the box-office coin of films like "Alice in Wonderland," though it did manage to pass "Sweeney Todd" over the weekend. The movie carried a reported production budget of $150 million.

In the limited-release world, "Moonrise Kingdom" collected $669,000 from just four theaters over four days. That estimate puts it ahead of "Dreamgirls" with the highest per screen average debut of any live action film. That number is also higher than filmmaker Wes Anderson's previous best, "The Royal Tenenbaums." Also in four theaters over the weekend: "The Intouchables," a French film that has already made $340 million worldwide, grossed $137,438 through Monday.

One of the stars of "The Avengers," Chris Hemsworth (Thor), will appear in theaters again this weekend as one of the title characters in "Snow White and the Huntsman." The movie co-stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron as the evil queen. It was directed by newcomer Rupert Sanders.

Rich-poor divide bogs down UN climate talks

Developing nations say the industrialized world - responsible for most of the emissions historically - should bear the brunt of the emissions cuts while developed nations want to make sure that fast-growing economies like China and India don't get off too easy.

U.N.?climate?talks ran into gridlock Thursday as a widening rift between rich and poor countries risked undoing some advances made last year in the decades-long effort to control carbon emissions that scientists say are overheating the planet.

As so often in the slow-moving negotiations, the session in Bonn bogged down with disputes over technicalities. But at the heart of the discord was the larger issue of how to divide the burden of emissions cuts between developed and developing nations. Developing nations say the industrialized world - responsible for most of the emissions historically - should bear the brunt of the emissions cuts while developed nations want to make sure that fast-growing economies like China and India don't get off too easy. China is now the world's top polluter.

"There is a total stalemate," said Artur Runge-Metzger, the chief negotiator for the European Union.

The negotiations in Bonn were meant to build on a deal struck in December in Durban, South Africa, to create a new global?climate?pact by 2015 that would make both rich and poor nations rein in emissions caused by the burning of oil and other fossil fuels. But on the next-to-last day of two weeks of talks there was little sign of progress, as different interpretations emerged on what, exactly, was agreed upon last year.

"There is distrust and there is frustration in the atmosphere," Seyni Nafo, spokesman for a group of African countries, told The Associated Press.

The European Union claims China and other developing countries are backsliding on commitments made in Durban to bring the discussion on emissions cuts from both rich and poor nations into one forum, instead of the current structure, which has two parallel negotiation tracks. Developing countries - backed by?climateactivists - accuse the U.S., EU and other industrialized nations of trying to evade commitments made in previous negotiations and shift responsibilities for tackling?climate?change to the developing world.

"Developed countries like the U.S., Japan, Canada and Russia ... have consistently blocked references to the existing legal principles, while continuing to ignore the fact that their meager emission cut targets expose the world's most vulnerable people to?climate?change's devastating effects," said Mohamed Adow, a senior?climatechange adviser at Christian Aid.

Meanwhile, emissions are going up, not down.

The Paris-based International Energy Agency said Thursday that carbon emissions from fossil fuels reached a record high of 31.6 gigatons in 2011, a 3.2 percent increase from the year before.

Despite improving on its energy efficiency, China accounted for the biggest contribution to the global increase, with emissions growing by 720 million tons, or 9.3 percent, the IEA said.

U.S. emissions fell by 1.7 percent, "primarily due to ongoing switching from coal to natural gas in power generation and an exceptionally mild winter," the agency said, while Japan's emissions rose 2.4 percent as it increased the use of fossil fuels in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The IEA data also showed that India moved ahead of Russia to become the fourth largest CO2 emitter, behind China, the U.S. and the EU.

Since their launch in the early 1990s, the?U.N. talks have had little success reducing emissions of the heat-trapping gases that a large majority of?climate?scientists say are warming the Earth, with potentially devastating consequences for poor countries ill-prepared to deal rising sea levels, floods, droughts and other effects of a changing?climate.

Actions taken and pledged so far fall well short of what the?U.N. experts say is needed to achieve the goal of preventing global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees Celsius) above current levels by the end of this century.

The only existing binding treaty, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, was shunned by the U.S. because it doesn't impose any emissions targets on China, thus leaving out the two biggest carbon emitters on the globe. It was set to expire this year but countries agreed in Durban to extend it, though they haven't agreed on how long. Canada, Japan and Russia have refused to make any new commitments under Kyoto, meaning it only covers about 15 percent of global emissions.

Because there are many various options available when it comes to loans, you want to be certain to make the right choice for you and your folks. By doing your research, you'll be capable of making a sensible decision.

Never start a property negotiation by making a low-ball offer you do not expect to pay. Your opening bid should invariably be a reasonable price. Low-balling divides the seller your are dealing with, and sets a combative tone for the remainder of the negotiation. It's much better by far to keep the entire sales process easy and honest.

Do not buy the 1st house you see and do not jump on a home because it is inexpensive or will close quickly. Do research, see other houses, and keep track of offers. By rushing into a purchase, you may skip steps like doing an inspection or buy something that you don?t actually like.

A key tip when buying real-estate is to be certain that you have a reputable real-estate agent. Your real-estate agent should be helping you review the documents and get you the best offer practical. If you sense that they are not the best at their job, it may be a good idea to find a new real-estate agent.

Home purchasers or any other kind of real estate shopper would do very well to aim for fixer-uppers in contrast to new, perfect homes. If you're prepared to provide the finishing touches on a property, you can save thousands upon thousands of bucks by putting in the work yourself. Purchasing brand new means you'll pay lots more.

When planning out how much house you can afford to buy, remember to work out in the maintenance costs of the home. Upkeep is one of the costliest factors in owning a home, but it's something many first time home purchasers will forget. Once you own the home, your property owner is no longer responsible if a pipe breaks, so economize for circumstances.

It?s all about making the right decision as a property buyer. If you're approaching buying without the correct information about the market, you could finish up losing money in a multitude of alternative ways. Use the tips that you have just learned here, to ensure that you purchase the best real-estate available.

Analysis: Indian rupee slump costly for $5.5 billion in convertible bonds

MUMBAI (Reuters) - When promising tech company Subex sold $180 million in five-year convertible bonds in March 2007 to fund the acquisition of a Canadian technology company, India was at the height of an unprecedented market boom.

The economy was growing at more than 9 percent a year, the Indian rupee was rallying towards a record high against the dollar and the Bombay Stock Exchange's main index <.bsesn> had surged six-fold in the previous five years, even trumping the performance of China's much vaunted Shanghai stocks.

Today, India and Subex face a different reality altogether. The stock market has dropped by a fifth from the end of 2007 and the rupee in recent weeks has hit successive record lows - a costly combination for Indian companies which together face foreign currency convertible bond redemptions this year of nearly $5.5 billion.

"There will be some casualties," said Jacques Berghmans, a Brussels-based India convertibles manager with TreeTop Asset Management, which looks after about 1 billion euros in assets. "Some of the companies are already over-leveraged and they will find it tough raising fresh funding in this market," he said.

Investor fear about the fate of the euro zone is the latest factor to have hit confidence in India, undermining the currency.

But investors have raised a number of India-specific red flags to explain why the rupee is the biggest losing currency this year in Asia among those monitored daily by Reuters, including a swelling current account, heavy government spending particularly on subsidies such as oil, a rash of unpredictable regulations and tax and a coalition that is struggling to push through any reforms to bolster an economy now growing at just above 6 percent.

The slide in the stock market meant the conversion prices for many of the convertible bonds was much higher than the market price of the issuer.

The dollars to pay off investors are also much more expensive. The rupee has dropped some 30 percent from its record high to its record low.

Fitch Ratings predicted in a report in February that about half of the 55 companies with maturing foreign currency convertible bonds (FCCBs) in 2012 were at risk of some type of restructuring or default.

In addition, with the government stuck in policy paralysis ahead of national general elections that must be held by 2014, overseas lenders could become more wary in general of Indian companies, which raised $30 billion in external commercial borrowings in 2011.

THE SUBEX EXPERIENCE

The combination of economic factors dragging on India, in particular a fiscal deficit estimated at almost 6 percent of GDP for the year to March 2012, has already prompted Standard & Poor's ratings agency to downgrade the outlook for India's credit rating, which stands just one notch above junk status.

A cut in the rating would raise borrowing costs across the board, adding to the premium lenders would demand from companies such as Subex in return for their capital.

It would also raise further doubts about India's position in the so-called BRICS of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, a grouping that represents the emerging markets challenging the world order so long dominated by North America and Europe. As India's credit rating is under pressure for a downgrade, rival Indonesia is on the up. Many see it as the new ?I' in BRICS.

Subex is a typical example of the problems many Indian companies face, said analysts, bondholders and executives of companies with overseas holdings.

Started as a provider of software products and services to global telecom companies, it faced a promising future in 2007. More recently, it has suffered from cutthroat competition and sluggish spending on technology in the wake of the global financial crisis.

After selling $180 million in five-year convertible bonds in 2007 it sold close to $100 million in three-year convertible notes in 2009, a year when the stock market rose a stunning 81 percent. Conversion, which seemed a reasonable prospect when the bonds were sold, is out of the question.

After some changes, the conversion price for the 2007 tranche was set at 136.04 rupees and for the 2009 tranche at 80 rupees. Subex stock closed on Friday at 24.60 rupees.

"FCCBs are usually a product of bull markets. People expected prices would go further up, and they set very high conversion prices," said Deep Mukherjee, a Fitch Ratings analyst in Mumbai.

In its February study, Fitch said Subex and six other companies were likely to restructure their convertible bonds with "significant distressed debt exchange" features.

Subex faces a deadline of July 9 to pay its debt, although it has reduced the outstanding amount to $94 million after redeeming some of the debt. The company is trying to convince investors to accept new 5-year notes in exchange for the existing ones. Subex did not respond to requests for comment.

Wind turbine maker Suzlon Ltd , with net debt of $2 billion that is three times its market value, is negotiating with bondholders to seek up to 45 more days to repay $360 million in FCCBs maturing in June, the company said this month.

The conversion price of 97.26 rupees a share is way above its stock price, which last traded at 20.45 rupees. Part of Suzlon's strategy is to raise up to $300 million in loans to pay the bondholders next month.

'SHEDDING TEARS'

Bigger and healthier firms such as Tata Motors and JSW Steel either have a combination of enough cash and assets on their balance sheets or access to domestic funding from bankers to avoid major problems.

Tata Steel has $473 million in FCCBs falling due this year, and JSW Steel $274 million.

For many executives the turn of fortune for India in the past few years has been a hard lesson. Smaller and medium-sized Indian firms now face a much tougher lending landscape.

"When we issued it, free money was available and I think no one expected that one will have to repay that amount," said Hiranya Ashar, chief financial officer of mid-sized IT services provider Rolta India .

"Everyone's expectation was growth is happening at 20 to 25 percent and if growth is happening then stock prices will also go up and eventually these FCCBs will get converted."

Rolta, which this month posted a drop in profit for the third quarter in a row, has raised $135 million from a clutch of Indian banks to redeem bonds maturing next month. It has to repay as the conversion price is five times the current market price.

"It was not easy to get the refinance done. All the lenders are very selectively giving refinance facilities ... our leverage levels are not very high as compared to maybe some other companies who are stretched," Ashar said.

Analysts say top quality Indian companies will still be able to raise funds from international investors. But smaller and medium sized companies that in previous years banked on a non-stop rising share prices, now face being shut out of markets, especially since many lenders are under pressure from regulators to boost capital ratios and lower their risks.

"Now, I don't want to touch 90 percent of Indian convertible bonds. It is very dangerous," said Berghmans, who holds bonds of Educomp Solutions and Rolta India among others.

However, bond investors can't cry foul, analysts say. Many were swept up into buying into India's seemingly unlimited potential without conducting the necessary financial due diligence.

"The risk is hitting them at a bad time, but should anybody shed any tears for these investors?" Fitch's Mukherjee said.

Revealed: Hundreds of words to avoid using online if you don?t want the government spying on you (and they include ?pork?, ?cloud? and ?Mexico?)

The Department of Homeland Security has been forced to release a list of keywords and phrases it uses to monitor social networking sites and online media for signs of terrorist or other threats against the U.S.

The intriguing the list includes obvious choices such as ?attack?, ?Al Qaeda?, ?terrorism? and ?dirty bomb? alongside dozens of seemingly innocent words like ?pork?, ?cloud?, ?team? and ?Mexico?.

Released under a freedom of information request, the information sheds new light on how government analysts are instructed to patrol the internet searching for domestic and external threats.

The words are included in the department?s 2011 ?Analyst?s Desktop Binder? used by workers at their National Operations Center which instructs workers to identify ?media reports that reflect adversely on DHS and response activities?.

Department chiefs were forced to release the manual following a House hearing over documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit which revealed how analysts monitor social networks and media organisations for comments that ?reflect adversely? on the government.

However they insisted the practice was aimed not at policing the internet for disparaging remarks about the government and signs of general dissent, but to provide awareness of any potential threats.

As well as terrorism, analysts are instructed to search for evidence of unfolding natural disasters, public health threats and serious crimes such as mall/school shootings, major drug busts, illegal immigrant busts.

The list has been posted online by the Electronic Privacy Information Center ? a privacy watchdog group who filed a request under the Freedom of Information Act before suing to obtain the release of the documents.

In a letter to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Counter-terrorism and Intelligence, the centre described the choice of words as ?broad, vague and ambiguous?.

Scroll down for full list

They point out that it includes ?vast amounts of First Amendment protected speech that is entirely unrelated to the Department of Homeland Security mission to protect the public against terrorism and disasters.?

A senior Homeland Security official told the Huffington Post that the manual ?is a starting point, not the endgame? in maintaining situational awareness of natural and man-made threats and denied that the government was monitoring signs of dissent.

However the agency admitted that the language used was vague and in need of updating.

Spokesman Matthew Chandler told website: ?To ensure clarity, as part of ? routine compliance review, DHS will review the language contained in all materials to clearly and accurately convey the parameters and intention of the program.?

Obama trying to defend record on spending and debt

Government spending and debt are emerging as a campaign tug-of-war.

Republican Mitt Romney blames President Barack Obama for a "prairie fire of debt." Obama calls the charge a "cowpie of distortion." Both candidates are reaching for unaligned, independent voters anxious about who's going to get stuck with the bill.

Spending and debt now rank as high on the worry scale as lack of jobs. And it has direct appeal to independents who could decide the election in about a half-dozen states being heavily contested by both campaigns.

Obama has taken a populist tone on reforming Wall Street and taxing corporations and the wealthy. But his defensive crouch on debt and spending reflect a hard reality: Polls consistently show voters, including independents, placing more trust in Romney to handle the debt.

The UK Government has announced plans to establish the world's first Open Data Institute, which will be co-directed by University of Southampton Professors Nigel Shadbolt and Sir Tim Berners-Lee, to support growth of new businesses on the back of Government data.

Based in Shoreditch in East London's Tech City, the world-leading Open Data Institute (ODI) will become the 'go to' venue for those seeking to create new products, entrepreneurial opportunities and economic growth from open data.

Initially the ODI will incubate, nurture and mentor new businesses that exploit open data to create new products and business opportunities to help drive economic growth. Further activities planned for the institute include 'appathons' or 'hackathons', to support work on newly-released data sets and to develop new use cases for open data.

It will promote innovation driven by the Government's Open Data policy, helping the public sector use its own data more effectively and developing the capability of UK businesses to exploit the commercial value of open data.

Co-director of the ODI Professor Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and Chair of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, says:

"One of the reasons the Web worked was because people reused each other's content in ways never imagined by those who created it. The same will be true of Open Data. The Institute will allow us to provide the tools, skills and methods to support the creation of new value using Open Government Data."

Professor Nigel Shadbolt, Head of the Web and Internet Science Group at the University of Southampton and co-director of the ODI, adds:

"Data is the new raw material of the 21st century and the UK is world-leading in the release of Open Government Data. The ODI will be a place that develops the very best UK talents in Open Data. It will be a focal point where current and future entrepreneurs and developers, technologists and creatives meet, share ideas, make things happen and drive growth."

The Government is to commit up to 10m over five years to support the Open Data Institute through the Technology Strategy Board in an unprecedented, match funded collaboration with industry and academic centres.

Cabinet Office minister Francis Maude said: "We don't just want to lead the world in releasing government data - our aim is to make the UK an international role model in exploiting the potential of open data to generate new businesses and stimulate growth.

"Establishing a centre of excellence and expertise in the heart of technology start-ups will support the very best UK talents to innovate and drive value from the data this government is opening up."

###

The ODI will officially open in September, with a core team of six senior staff and 10-12 others working part time.

?Going green? in real estate ? More Government control? | ABI Real ...

Just what do your local government officials think up to control your life and charge fees for that control in the name of ?going green??? I can see the day where it may be mandatory for you to convert all plumbing fixtures into low flow;? HVAC & H2O systems into high efficiency; and/or windows into double panes before you can sell your home.? It?s only a matter of your time and energy fighting against government control.

Fremont California near Oakland?is considering making energy improvements and water saving features in houses mandatory before you can sell your property.? Source:? http://www.insidebayarea.com/news/ci_19844726

The unicorporated (non city) area of Dekalb County Georgia has a similar provision in which you can?t connect to the municipal water supply or start a new account unless a licensed plumber has certified that you have installed low flow water fixtures in your home.? This stems from an EPA regulation in 1994 that new homes must be fitted with toilets that use a maximum of 1.6 gallons of water per flush.? With the older 1.6 gallon flush toilets, that meant that you flushed twice to get the same impact and disposing of waste, which resulted in more water usage.

Sure, the extra water usage from growing populations probably taxed the watershed system of each municipality, but isn?t that what the Government planners are supposed to keep in mind when approving residential/commercial real estate development?? Aren?t you glad we?ve elected smart people in Government to make those decisions for us?

And don?t get me on green building?that?s a whole new boondoggle to sell you stuff untested over time!? It?s just like pharmaceutical medications, a solution to one problem creates side effect symptoms of others.

Egyptians vote in historic election

Egyptians were voting Wednesday in an historic presidential election contested by Islamists and secularists promising different futures for the country after the overthrow of veteran dictator Hosni Mubarak.

The euphoria felt by many voters was marred after a policeman was shot dead when he was caught up in a gunfight between supporters of two presidential candidates outside a polling station in Cairo.

Another person was injured in the same fight, security sources told AFP.

Queues formed outside polling stations long before they opened at 08:00 am (0600 GMT), with voters in a festive mood.

"It's a beautiful day for Egypt," said Nehmedo Abdel Hadi, who was voting at the Omar Markram school in Cairo's Shubra neighbourhood.

"Now I feel this is my country and I have dignity," said the 46-year-old woman, who wears a full-face veil.

Across the city, in the leafy Mohandesseen neighbourhood, Rania, wearing gym clothes and a ponytail under her baseball cap, was at the front of the line.

"It's the first time in Egypt's history we choose our president," she said, preferring to keep her choice "a secret between me and my ballot box."

More than 50 million eligible voters have been called to choose one of 12 candidates wrestling to succeed ousted president Hosni Mubarak.

Voting over two days is taking place at 13,000 polling stations, with initial results expected on Sunday. Voting ends at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on both days.

A senior interior ministry official said police were on standby across the country and helping soldiers secure polling stations.

The election marks the final phase of a tumultuous transition overseen by the ruling military council after Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising last year.

After decades of pre-determined results, for the first time, the outcome of the vote in the Arab world's most populous nation -- which also pits revolutionaries against old regime members -- is wide open.

According to pollsters, the large number of voters undecided between candidates reflecting radically different trends and the novelty of a free presidential vote make Wednesday's election almost impossible to call.

Among the leading contenders is former foreign minister and Arab League chief Amr Mussa, who is seen as an experienced politician and diplomat but like Ahmed Shafiq , Mubarak's last prime minister, is accused of belonging to the old regime.

The powerful Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Mursi faces competition from Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh, a former member of the Islamist movement who portrays himself as a consensus choice with a wide range of support.

The next president will inherit a struggling economy, deteriorating security and the challenge of uniting a nation divided by the uprising and its sometimes deadly aftermath, but his powers are yet to be defined by a new constitution.

Islamist candidates have promised an Islamic-based project that will meet the revolution's goals, prompting fears among secularists and Egypt's Coptic minority over personal freedoms and raising questions over the future of the country's lucrative tourism industry.

Shafiq and Mussa have vowed to maintain stability and restore law and order but their ties to the old regime sparked fears of renewed protests by those who will feel their revolution threatened.

The election caps a rollercoaster transition, marked by political upheaval and bloodshed, but which also witnessed democratic parliamentary elections that saw Islamist groups score a crushing victory.

Candidates have been campaigning across the country for weeks in an unprecedented democratic exercise made possible by the early 2011 revolt.

The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), in power since Mubarak's ouster, urged Egyptians to turn out en masse to the polls, while warning against any "violation."

The SCAF has vowed to hand power to civilian rule by the end of June, after a president is elected, but many fear its retreat will be just an illusion.

The army, with its vast and opaque economic power, wants to keep its budget a secret by remaining exempt from parliamentary scrutiny, maintain control of military-related legislation and secure immunity from prosecution.

Mubarak, 84 and ailing, may watch the election from a military hospital on the outskirts of Cairo as he awaits the verdict of his murder trial on June 2.

The former strongman is accused of involvement in the killing of some 850 protesters during the uprising and of corruption.

Diamond Pet Foods Expands Recall: Two cats reported dead ...

By BL Ochman

Additional brands are being added to the ever-growing recall of dog and cat food made by Diamond Pet Foods.

Causing increasing concern among pet owners is the fact that Diamond Pet Foods is slow to update its recall information page, despite widespread reports that more brands are involved.

The Christian Science Monitor reports that Diamond has not been transparent in their handling of the recall. ?Pet food recall from Diamond Pet Foods has been expanded eight times, triggered an FDA investigation and critique, and now includes cat food. The company?s handling of the salmonella crisis may be even worse,? the paper states.

Diamond is handling the recall wrong
Despite FDA reports that ?All reasonable precautions are not taken to ensure that production procedures to not contribute contamination from any source,? Diamond did not immediately announce the recall or the brands involved. The FDA report also pointed out that the factory?s screening process for possible contaminants wasn?t thorough enough.

Diamond handled it the wrong way,? Mike Sagman, creator and editor of dogfoodadviser.com, a consumer site that rates dog food products and follows pet-food industry news, including recalls, told the Monitor. ?The company knew more than they were letting out, and they let it dribble out over the month instead of releasing it all in one document. The damage is greater when you aren?t transparent.?

Two more dogs can be added to the list of clinically confirmed infections in the Diamond Pet Foods Salmonella Infantis outbreak, according to FDA?s Laura Alvey, Deputy Director, Communications Staff at the agency?s Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Safety Guidelines
According to Food Safety News there are 15 outbreak-related confirmed human cases of Salmonella infections in the USA and one Canadian case. Five people have been hospitalized.

? Follow the tips listed on the FDA?s ?Salmonella from Dry Pet Food and Treats?to help prevent an infection with Salmonella from handling dry pet food and treats.

? Washing hands is the most important step to prevent illness. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with water and soap right after handling pet food and treats, and especially before preparing, serving or eating food, drinks or preparing baby bottles. Also, always wash hands right after handling or cleaning up after your pets.

Be sure to keep up to date on the recall information because it is changing and expanding daily and your pets? health ? and your own ? are at stake.

news: Working with Structured Settlement Brokers to Obtain the Best ...

Structured settlement brokers are an important part of establishing annuity payment transactions. This sort of agreement is commonly used to deliver monetary settlement to people that have been injured through negligence, as well as to payout jackpot lotto earnings.

Structured settlement brokers often consult with lawyers to provide information and advice about the different types of annuity plans. Brokers are often called upon to negotiate the best deal for clients of personal injury law firms or to answers questions about offers that are presented.

Structured settlements are as unique as the people who receive them. They can be arranged to address the current and future monetary needs of Annuitants. The amount of compensation provided to people that have been injured depends on several factors. These include the Annuitant's expected life span and anticipated financial requirements to receive proper healthcare and maintain their standard of living.

Structured settlements can be setup to supply adequate cash to cover the costs of immediate legal fees or medical expenses. The balance of the settlement award is paid over time through annuity payments. Annuities can be paid for a certain number of years or for a lifetime.

Brokers gather information about the Annuitant's lifestyle, along with their anticipated healthcare requirements. They also review the Annuitant's credit report, employment history, and medical history to evaluate life care plans.

A key element that is considered when establishing structured settlements is age rating. Life insurance companies underwrite annuity payments. When policies are offered to customers their premiums are calculated on age ratings that include Preferred, Standard, and Substandard. People that have substandard ratings are usually declined coverage, but in the case of annuity payments a substandard rating can work in their favor.

People with substandard ratings often receive a better rate-of-return because they have a decreased life expectancy. Factors that cause a substandard rating include smoking, alcohol consumption, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and chronic health problems such as severe depression or multiple sclerosis.

Brokers obtain quotes from several life insurance providers to find the best deal for Annuitants. When needed, structured settlement brokers can consult with government agencies that supply supplemental income to Annuitants to ensure that annuity payments will not interfere with benefits.

Brokers are a good source for obtaining financial planning and tax advice about structured settlements. People who receive compensation for injuries are not required to pay taxes on annuity income, while compensation for lottery winnings is taxed at state and federal levels. If annuities continue after death and distributions are paid to an estate, funds are subject to estate tax.

Annuity payments can be setup to pay on a monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual basis. Payment amounts can vary or be equal with each installment. Once established, structured settlements can't be changed so it is vital to make certain they are exactly as needed before signing on the dotted line.

There are times when people choose to sell future payments to acquire lump sum cash. Most states prohibit this practice, but there are a few that allow Annuitants to assign payment rights to a funding source.

It's strongly recommended to work with structured settlement brokers when transferring payment rights. Only work with brokers that are insured against errors and omissions and registered through the Department of Justice. A list of registered brokers is provided at Justice.gov.
