Alpha males and adventurous human females : gender and synthetic genomics

In May of 2010, two influential Science papers changed the way that we think about the past and future of genomes. The decoding of the Neandertal genome showed that humans and Neandertals interbred some time before Neandertals went extinct some 30,000 years ago. A couple weeks later, the J. Craig Venter Institute announced their chemical synthesis of a complete bacterial genome and its ?booting up? in a closely related cell. The coincidence of the announcement of ancient and synthetic genomes, as well as the recent publication of technologies for large scale bacterial genome engineering from George Church?s lab led some people to ask whether it would be possible to clone Neandertals by a combination of gene synthesis, human genome editing, and stem cell cloning.

While the New Scientist article about the implications of the Neandertal genome was pessimistic on the short-term prospect of ?resurrecting? Neandertals, George Church himself has more recently made news by suggesting how such a future scenario might work in his recent book Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves. In the book?s introduction, Church (with science writer Ed Regis) writes:

You?d start with a stem cell genome from a human adult and gradually reverse-engineer it into the Neanderthal genome or a reasonably close equivalent. These stem cells can produce tissues and organs. If society becomes comfortable with cloning and sees value in true human diversity, then the whole Neanderthal creature itself could be cloned by a surrogate mother chimp?or by an extremely adventurous human female.

While the news storm has made it seem like this is an active area of research in the Church lab, George has been clear that his statements were meant to spark discussion about the myriad social and ethical aspects of such an endeavor given its possible technical feasibility, not to recruit any surrogate mothers to a study.

Ethical concerns have been paramount in the development of reproductive technologies, mammalian cloning, stem cell biology, genomics, and synthetic biology in recent decades, and the question of Neandertal resurrection would certainly engage with the ethical concerns arising from all of these fields. For now, I want to address just one very small social aspect of Church?s statement, and how it affects the practice of synthetic biology. For Church, the prospect of cloning Neandertals is in large part about diversity. In the Der Spiegel interview, Church contradicts the interviewer when asked whether it would be ethical to create a Neandertal for the sake of curiosity. Church says:

Well, curiosity may be part of it, but it?s not the most important driving force. The main goal is to increase diversity. The one thing that is bad for society is low diversity. This is true for culture or evolution, for species and also for whole societies. If you become a monoculture, you are at great risk of perishing. Therefore the recreation of Neanderthals would be mainly a question of societal risk avoidance.

For such a technological commitment to human diversity, Church?s book tells a very different story about diversity amongst the practitioners of synthetic biology. Of the approximately 160 names mentioned in the book?s index, only 10% are the names of women, and only one of those names is a practicing academic synthetic biologist, involved in the founding of one of Church?s many startup companies. The ?extremely adventurous human female? mentioned in the context of Neandertal surrogacy (and easily replaceable by a chimpanzee) therefore represents a significant percentage of all the women mentioned in the whole book.

This observation points at not only the continuing lack of women and minorities in science, engineering, and technology, but at perhaps a deeper problem about the culturally perceived character of the engineer and the growing mythology surrounding well-known synthetic biologists. Craig Venter, a major figure in genomics, both natural and synthetic, and no stranger to the myth-making of scientists, wrote about how he sees himself in response to the 2013 Edge question ?What *Should* We Be Worried About?:

As a scientist, an optimist, an atheist and an alpha male I don?t worry. As a scientist I explore and seek understanding of the world (s) around me and in me. As an optimist I wake up each morning with a new start on all my endeavors with hope and excitement. As an atheist I know I only have the time between my birth and my death to accomplish something meaningful. As an alpha male I believe I can and do work to solve problems and change the world.

As we write the history of synthetic biology and the pioneering scientists and engineers who are rewriting the code of life, it is these ?alpha males? who are written as the adventurous creators of new life forms and ?adventurous females? that are the anonymous vessels for their DNA-based creations. For Venter?s ?Synthia,? the chemically synthesized genome came to be seen as ?life,? while the host cell whose membrane, cytoplasm, and proteins ?booted up? the inert DNA is but the ?chassis.? In the potential design of a Neandertal baby, a human being is the ?chassis? organism, the ?donor cell? for a transplanted genome, the unpredictable host context that can confound synthetic biology designs.

In such scientific imaginings we get futuristic versions of some very retrograde cultural ideas about gender. While I know that these men don?t actually think of the women in their lives and in their labs as simply vessels for DNA (some of my best friends are male synthetic biologists!), I also know that leaving these kinds of statements unexamined can lead to an environment that makes it harder for women working in these labs, harder for women to be chosen as speakers at quantitative synthetic biology conferences, and harder for women to be promoted and advance in their field. Before we discuss the potential of cloned Neandertals to boost human diversity, we must first consider our role in boosting the diversity of our labs, companies, faculty, and conferences with the humans that actually exist.

Could Coconut Oil Be the Unlikely Hero for Alzheimer's? | Gnet ...

There have been recent reports in the press of an unlikely treatment for Alzheimer?s disease, which produces results like nothing seen before. Those experimenting with this home-trialed remedy have experienced a much higher brain function, including improved memory and awareness, better moods, and a renewed grasp on daily life. And the treatment in question? Simply a few large spoonfuls of coconut oil everyday.

Coconut Oil: What is it?

Coconut oil is very simply an oil derived from the meat of the coconut. It is used worldwide in a number of ways, as a cooking ingredient, as a moisturiser for skin and hair, in soaps and in candles.

Coconut oil is very simply an oil derived from the meat of the coconut. It is used worldwide in a number of ways, as a cooking ingredient, as a moisturiser for skin and hair, in soaps and in candles.

Alzheimer?s and Coconut Oil:

So how could this simple vegetable oil help with one of the most prevalent age-related diseases that exists? Well, the truth is, we are still not entirely sure. At this stage, the results are purely anecdotal, and no thorough clinical study has been carried out to validate these claims.

However, we are not just talking about a few anecdotes here- there are simply hundreds of reports, primarily across the United States, which tell the same story: namely, after a few weeks of taking a spoonful of coconut oil twice a day, the family are able to reclaim a little bit of quality time with a family member that they thought they had lost to the disease.

Although the exact science behind the discovery is not yet known, there is a main theory that could back-up coconut oil?s usefulness as a treatment. Professor Kieran Clarke from the physiological biochemistry department at Oxford University, suggests that the answer lies in the high levels of fat found in the oil.

The food we eat everyday is converted to energy in the body- this happens most easily with carbohydrates, which are broken down to sugars and provide, in this case, our brain cells with all the fuel they need to carry out their individual functions.

When we don?t eat for a while, our cells will support themselves by using our stored fat as an alternative fuel source. This fat does not break down as sugars, but rather as ketones, which will feed the brain cells until we supply it with a ready supply of sugars again. Coconut oil contains large amounts of the right sort of fat that can be broken down into ketones.

In the case of people with Alzheimer?s, it seems to be the case that these ketones can feed the brain cells in a way that the sugars from food are no longer able to. And the result is that the brain can operate at a much higher function, and some of its previous health can be temporarily restored.

Coconut oil is also very high in polyphenols; antioxidants that can soak up free radicals. Free radicals are tiny atomic particles that crash around inside cells as a result of the numerous chemical reactions that occur as a cell carries out its functions.

These particles can cause devastating amounts of damage, and are thought to contribute significantly to the deterioration of brain cells in diseases such as Alheimer?s and dementia. So the presence of antioxidants in high levels will slow this process, and in theory slow the progression of the disease.

Coconut Oil: The Jury is Still Out

While reports are both moving and continually positive, it is important to remind ourselves that at this point they are simply personal accounts, and no actual study has been conducted to support them. However, research has started and no doubt definitive answers will begin appearing soon.

In the meantime, there are several health considerations to bear in mind before anyone commences on a home-trial of their own. Firstly, coconut oil is obviously extremely calorific, and can dramatically increase your daily calorie-intake before you even take food into consideration- this should certainly be factored into any healthy diet, to ensure you don?t acquire any undesired weight-gain!

Adding large amounts of fat to your diet can also have an impact on your digestive system, and could result in sickness or diarrhea.

Most importantly perhaps, coconut oil is very high in saturated fats, which contribute to our cholesterol levels, and can have a huge effect on the health of our hearts. So if you suffer from any pre-existing cholesterol or heart problems, this should be avoided.

If You Are Worried, See Your Doctor:

We must stress that if you are suffering from any problems that you suspect may be related to Alzheimer?s, you should first and foremost visit your doctor.

Memory problems are often not the sign of degenerative disease, but of factors entirely unrelated; so don?t be worried, and don?t self-diagnose or self-treat. Get to your doctor, and once you have received a medical opinion, you can decide the right course of action for you.

Roe v. Wade at 40: Six questions about the state of abortion rights today

On Tuesday, the United States marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the historic US Supreme Court decision that granted women the right to an abortion. Still, in many parts of the country it is far harder for a woman to obtain an abortion today than it was in 1973. Here is a look at the state of abortion rights in America.

- Amanda Paulson,?Staff writer

1. How easy is it for a woman in 2013 to get an abortion?

This varies drastically, depending upon where she lives, what kind of insurance she has, and how much money she has.

A woman in, say, a metropolitan part of California ? where providers are fairly numerous and a fair amount of local public funding will help to pay for the procedure ? may have pretty easy access. A poor woman in Washington, D.C., where public funding of abortion is prohibited, may have a hard time paying for it. And for a poor or middle-class woman in South Dakota, where just one clinic operates (on a part-time basis) and anyone seeking an abortion must navigate a labyrinth of counseling and delay restrictions, it may prove virtually impossible.

When it comes to reproductive rights, ?there?s very much a class divide,? says Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager for the Guttmacher Institute, an abortion-rights research organization. ?Women who have money and resources and are used to the health-care system will be able to access abortion.... Women who are poor ? these restrictions make it more difficult for them.?

Pipe bending machines and pipe forming machines: advantages of electrical and hydraulic systems in a newly developed transfluid-solution combined

New hybrid drive system for tube processing machines

A new hybrid drive system of transfluid provides more precision, energy efficiency and performance in advanced tube processing technologies.

Compromises in many areas of everyday life might often be a good way. When developing new technologies they prevent often the best solution. In tube processing this applies especially to the selection of the drive system for pipe bending machines and pipe forming machines or manufacturing cells for tube processing. Electric drives are energy efficient, highly accurate and largely independent of external influences. The hydraulic drives have a unique power density and robustness. No system can to cover both as standard. This gap covers transfluid with a new development. For the best solution, the engineers of the South Westphalian (Germany) transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH have developed a unique system that combines some advantages of both systems and exclude disadvantages. With these new hybrid drive options, the advanced tube processing technology is brought into best form.

Up to 20% increase in energy efficiency
The hybrid drives are effectively matched to the requirements of the corresponding pipe forming machines and pipe bending machines. Hydraulic units of the new system are equipped with constant pumps and are driven by a powerful servo motor. Almost the entire control of the system takes place via the power or rotation speed of the motor. It is very energy efficient. Generally improves the energy efficiency by 15 to 20 %, since the power is always given in accordance with the consumer.

Quieter, smaller, more precise
Its advantages shows the technology especially in areas where powerful drives are requiredas well as with several hydraulic cylinders of different sizes and at different speeds. This applies especially for pipe bending processes and axial pipe forming machines. The hybrid drives are not only smaller and much quieter in operation. Also the heating in the process is minimized. The hydraulic unit needs up to 20% less volume of oil and the required performance of the external cooler is correspondingly lower.

?Efficient machines need efficient drive?
Unique for hydraulic drives is the new positioning accuracy due to the hybrid system. Since each consumer is supplied with a specific volume of oil positions (depending on the consumer) can be approached in the 1/10 mm range. Via the electrical control, the consumption volumes are preselected or stored and via the rotational speed of the drive motor submitted precise.

Responsible for high precision means is not least the specially designed control system. It provides a synchronization of the desired speed of the consumer in relation to the required volume. To ensure that no excess volume is generated. With the combination of electronics and hydraulics, the new solution of transfluid , thus ensuring improved efficiency and ensures that requirements are met in the best possible terms of drive technology.

transfluid Maschinenbau GmbH ? the solution for tubes

Since 1988 transfluid continually improved technologies in tube processing to meet customers? demands, offering optimum, tailor-made solutions in machine and plant construction, that are used in the automobile, ship building and furniture industries as well as the construction of railings and conveyor technology. The Schmallenberg-based company has become a global brand with service offices in Europe and Asia.

transfluid?s product portfolio offers perfect solutions in five different machine categories, that meet all the requirements in tube processing. t bend includes semi- and fully-automatic tube bending machines as well as large-diameter tube bending machines.. t form represents high-quality axial, rolling and combined tube forming machines. Automation systems with sophisticated concepts for bending and forming technology belong to the t motion category. With t cut, transfluid offers tube cutting machines in different system variants und t clean is transfluid?s range of tube cleaning machines for guaranteed cleanliness of work pieces and pipes.

Swann Bolt HD action camera shoots 1080p video, 12MP stills with laser targeting

Swann Bolt HD action camera shoots 1080p video, 12MP stills with laser targeting

We're starting to wonder where introducing lasers doesn't make everything better. Case in point: Swann's just-shipping Bolt HD action camera. While the 1080p video, microSD storage and 135-degree lens will be familiar from the Freestyle HD we saw in 2011, there's now a laser pointer to make sure the camera is on target when it isn't an option to peek through the detachable LCD. A sleeker look and an upgrade to 12-megapixel still photos also give us reason to upgrade. It's not a uniform move upwards from the Freestyle HD, however -- the Bolt HD can only submerge to 32 feet versus the 65 of its ancestor. As long as your scuba dives don't run that deep, however, the lower $200 price for the new camera might prove tempting.

Pirate Party Australia officially becomes political party ? RT

Screenshot from http://pirateparty.org.au/

Australia's Pirate Party has become an official political organization after its registration was approved by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC), the party announced.

?The Commission Tweeted on Monday that the Party was officially registered on January 17. After conducting a series of tests, the Commission "found no reason to refuse the Party's application", wrote the AEC in a statement published on its web site.

The Pirate Party submitted its application in October 2012 and had received only one objection by the January 14 deadline, which was not considered sufficient grounds for a refusal, continued the AEC.

The Party, which describes itself as being "based around the core tenets of freedom of information and culture, civil and digital liberties, and governmental transparency," plans to focus on developing policies and selecting candidates for this year's federal elections, said the party's President David W. Campbell.

"More than ever before there is a necessity in Australia for a Party that holds empowerment, participation, free culture and openness as its central tenets. A Party that understands the modern emerging information society and the imperative for political transparency," said Pirate Party founder Rodney Serkowsky.?

"As the Prime Minister condemns whistleblowers and publishers without trial, the spectre of data retention looms, policy is laundered and Australia?s interests are sidelined by faceless diplomats and bureaucrats? there has never been more reason to put pirates in parliament," concluded Serkowsky.

Founded in 2009 and based on Sweden's Pirate Party, it hopes to mobilize the growing number of Australian voters opposed the introduction of an Internet filter, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) and recent attempts to increase regulation of the Internet by the UN International Telecommunication Union (ITU)?? all of which have been actively endorsed by the Australian Government.

In a similarly controversial initiative, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange recently announced his intention to run for a seat in the Australian Senate in the upcoming elections, as well as the formation of a Wikileaks Party. Despite being confined to the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, plans for the registration of the party were "significantly advanced", said Assange.

He is able to register as an overseas candidate in the states of New South Wales and Victoria. Regulations would allow him to appoint a proxy to take up his seat, if he is elected but unable to return.

Actress-turned-activist sees GOP immigration deal

(AP) ? Actress-turned-activist Eva Longoria says Republicans have a moral, political and economic duty to compromise on immigration.

Longoria is credited with helping bring Hispanic support to President Barack Obama. She says everyone should be, quote, "engaged in a level that would affect policy" because "that's how our government is set up."

Hispanics voted 7 to 1 for Obama over his challenger, Republican Mitt Romney. Analysts say that while immigration is not the top issue for Hispanic voters, many were turned off by Republicans' hard-line stance on the issue.

During the GOP primary, Romney touted self-deportation as a solution to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. And he said he would not let immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children to stay.

Longoria spoke on ABC's "This Week."

Applying to Colleges ? Bnr.Co

The number of high school graduates in Kenya has risen over the years and so has the demand for greater education. The middle level colleges have come in to fill this gap for otherwise qualified students who could not make it to the Kenyan Universities. Applying to Kenyan Colleges has become fairly tedious simply because of the mushrooming of the Colleges left, right and centre. Many students apply for courses in IT, Personal computer Science and Company because these are the expertise which are high in demand at the moment. It is very tough to determine the Colleges but some recommendations may well be useful in choosing the correct College.

Initial, you must examine the facilities of the college you intend to attend. The greatest Kenyan Colleges usually have an array of facilities in order to make the understanding of a student worthwhile. Some IT colleges in Kenya even go to the extent of supplying a laptop for each student as effectively as unlimited internet connection. Similarly the very best Kenyan Pc Colleges give external exams in addition to their own internal exams. This gives the College validity and accreditation which is very valued by the Kenyan employers. You would be amazed at how several Kenyan Colleges offer exams that several employers have no thought of. This can be a extremely traumatizing expertise for a Student.

Though some pc Colleges in Kenya are widely acclaimed and recognized both at home and abroad, several offer such substandard education that 1 would be amazed at why they charge such ridiculous fees. It is for this purpose that you must take extreme caution when applying to a Kenyan College.

US officials in Japan to examine Dreamliner

A team of experts from?US aviation authorities and Boeing have?arrived in Japan to inspect a 787 Dreamliner passenger?plane that made an?emergency landing on a domestic All Nippon Airways' flight.

The incident prompted regulators in the US and?around the world to ground the 50 Dreamliners already in?service.?

The Japanese plane?is being?investigated after warning lights indicated a battery problem on?the ANA flight on Wednesday.

The 787, a lightweight, mainly carbon-composite aircraft,?has been plagued by mishaps, raising concerns over its use of?lithium-ion batteries.

The five representatives from the US National?Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation?Administration and Boeing are helping Japanese authorities?in the investigation of the aircraft, which remains parked at?the side of Takamatsu airport in the west of the country.

The Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) aims to end its?initial checks by around midday on Saturday, a person familiar
with the matter told Reuters, and will make further decisions?based on how the investigations go on Friday.

'Vilified'

GS Yuasa Corp, the Japanese company that makes?batteries for the Dreamliner, said it has?also sent three engineers?to Takamatsu to help the investigation.

All Nippon Airways (Japan)

Japan Airlines:

United Airlines (United States):

LAN Airlines (Chile):

Air India:
-6 GROUNDED
LOT Airlines (Poland):
- 2 GROUNDED
Qatar Airways:
- 5 GROUNDED
Ethiopian Airlines:
- 4 GROUNDED

A person at the company, who asked not to be named due to?the sensitivity of the issue, said: "Our company's battery has?been vilified for now, but it only functions as part of a whole?system.

"So we're trying to find out exactly where there was a?problem within the system."

Meanwhile Australia's Qantas Airways said on Friday it had cancelled an order for one of 15 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners earmarked for its budget arm Jetstar.

The decision to cancel the order was reached at the end?of 2012, Qantas said in a statement, before?the string of recent?problems with the aircraft that culminated in the grounding of?the Dreamliner fleet.

Poland's airline LOT said it may seek compensation?from Boeing for the grounding of its two 787 Dreamliner planes.

LOT said both its Dreamliners are safe to fly, but kept them?grounded in?Chicago and Warsaw after flight safety?authorities banned all Dreamliners from flying.

Tomasz Balcerzak, LOT's deputy president,?said on?Thursday that?the airline is?counting costs incurred by the idling of the planes and in due time will?complain to Boeing. He stressed the problems are not the fault of the?airline.

Huge costs

Meanwhile, Japan's transport ministry said a fuel?leak on a Japan Airlines (JAL)-operated 787 last week was due to a malfunction in?a drive mechanism that controls a valve.

It said the British?company that makes the valve was investigating the problem. The ministry?declined to name the firm.

Keeping the 787s on the ground could cost ANA alone more?than $1.1m a day, Mizuho Securities calculated, noting?the Dreamliner was key to the airline's growth strategy.

JAL has cancelled?eight Dreamliner flights on its Tokyo-San?Diego route until January 25, affecting?about 1,290 passengers, and?is switching aircraft for another 70 flights scheduled to fly?the 787.

The JTSB has said the battery on the ANA flight that made?the emergency landing was blackened and carbonised, had a bulge?in the middle, and weighed 5kg less than normal.?

The use of new battery technology is among the cost-saving?features of the 787, which Boeing says burns 20 percent less?fuel than rival jetliners using older technology.

The plane?represents a leap in aircraft design, but the project has been?plagued by cost overruns and years of delays.

Nikkei: Nintendo to launch unified console and handheld division by ...

Nikkei Nintendo to roll handheld and console development into one division

Nintendo plans to merge its handheld and console gaming units into one division to create next generation hardware "that will turn heads," according to Nikkei. It's reporting that the gaming outfit is feeling the heat from tablet and smartphone gaming (and likely upstart outfits like Ouya, too) so is looking to speed up the development cycle and increase product interoperability. That's why it's allegedly bringing the brain power from all its divisions together to inaugurate the unified division by February 16th of this year -- transferring in 130 console and 150 handheld engineers, to start. Nikkei said it'll house the new team in a $340 million facility next to its Kyoto HQ that'll be completed by the end of the year, seeing it as "a hotbed of new ideas." All this comes on the heels of tepid launches of the Wii U console and Nintendo 3DS gamepad -- making a shakeup none too shocking, if true.

Update: We contacted Nintendo, who confirmed by email that the report is, indeed, accurate.

FAA grounds all Boeing 787s

15 hrs.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Wednesday grounded all Boeing 787 planes operated by U.S. carriers?until the aircraft, also known as Dreamliners, are proven to be safe to fly.

United is the only U.S. carrier now operating ?787s and has six of the innovative jets.?The FAA's action follows a number of high-profile incidents?with the new aircraft over the past week, including fuel leaks, a battery fire, a?wiring problem and a?brake computer glitch.

"We've had two incidents involving batteries, involving charging circuits that are under question?that have resulted in one case in a?fire, in one case of?smoke," said?John Cox, NBC News?aviation analyst.

In a statement, the FAA said it?will issue an emergency airworthiness directive to address a potential battery fire risk in the 787s. Before further flight, the agency will require Boeing to demonstrate that the batteries in the planes?are safe.

United told NBC News in a statement that it will comply with the airworthiness directive. "We will work closely with the FAA and Boeing on the technical review as we work toward restoring 787 service." The airline said it would begin accommodating customers on other aircraft.

Boeing told NBC News that it is cooperating with the FAA.

"We are confident the 787 is safe and we stand behind its overall?integrity," said Boeing Chairman, President and CEO Jim McNerney?in?a?statement.?"We will be taking every necessary step in the coming days to?assure our customers and the traveling public of the 787's safety and?to return the airplanes to service."

Earlier Wednesday, Japan's two leading airlines grounded their Boeing 787?fleets after one of the passenger jets made an emergency landing.?The moves will make?Japan a test case for how Boeing?customers respond to safety concerns surrounding the Dreamliner 787, the pride of Boeing's passenger jet fleet, airline industry watchers said.

Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA) operate about half of the 50 new Dreamliners so far delivered by Boeing, and focus is firmly on Japan and what steps Boeing takes there to allay safety concerns.

"The most number of 787s in service are in Japan right now, therefore that is a big market for Boeing. A lot of the existing Boeing customers will be looking to see what action is taken in Japan in particular before they decide what action they are going to take with their orders," said Siva Govindasamy, Asia managing editor at Flightglobal, an industry news service.

"You can be pretty sure that 1-2 of those customers are already in talks with Boeing to see what is going on and to rectify any issues before they get their aircraft. That's going to be very crucial right now, so the onus is on Boeing to take action," he said.

India's aviation regulator said on Wednesday that it would decide whether or not to ground the Dreamliner jets only after Boeing submitted its safety report. State-owned Air India has six Dreamliners in its fleet. Australian carrier Qantas said its orders for 15 Boeing Dreamliner remain on track.

A senior Boeing engineer said last week that the plane maker had confidence in the Dreamliner despite recent mishaps that included a battery fire.

Still, industry watchers urged Boeing to take no risks with the Dreamliner and to take more steps straight away to assuage the safety concerns.

"This problem (with the Dreamliner) looks to be systemic, it looks to be recurring. In that respect, my view is ?.that they should consider grounding the entire Dreamliner fleet, not only limited to Japan but globally," Jonathan Galaviz, managing director & chief economist at Galaviz & Company told CNBC'S "Capital Connection."

CNBC's Dhara Ranasinghe ?contributed to this report.

Jamie Dimon will get a pay cut after trading loss

NEW YORK (AP) ? JPMorgan Chase's Chief Executive Jamie Dimon will get his pay cut by half because of a trading loss that cost the bank more than $6 billion last year and drew sanctions from federal regulators.

The bank, the country's biggest by assets, said it would cut Dimon's pay to $11.5 million for 2012, consisting of $1.5 million in salary and restricted stock awards of $10 million. That's less than half last year's pay of $23 million, which made him the highest-paid chief executive of any of the country's mega-banks.

The loss, which was related to complex investments known as credit derivatives, tarnished the bank's reputation as a scrupulous manager of risk and marked a personal setback for Dimon, a longtime critic of efforts to clamp down on regulatory oversight of major U.S. financial institutions. Dimon appeared twice before Congress to apologize and explain how the losses came about.

The bank released two internal reviews of the matter on the same day that it reported a 55 percent jump in earnings for the fourth quarter of 2012. The bank's board of directors concluded that the loss was "a serious mistake," but it also praised Dimon for his response, which included shutting down the division that was responsible for the loss and getting rid of top managers.

Dimon, speaking on a conference call with reporters, said the trading loss is "very close to being a non-issue from a trading point" of view, though he also noted that the trading loss could bring the bank more regulatory headaches.

"Companies have problems," Dimon said. "The problem embarrassed us. We're fixing it."

Dimon had initially dismissed concerns about the loss before its full scale was known last year, referring to them as a "tempest in a teapot."

On Monday, the Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, both bank regulators, slapped sanctions on JPMorgan for the trading loss and ordered it to tighten up its risk management procedures. JPMorgan, which neither admitted nor denied wrongdoing in the order, says it is working hard to correct any problems.

Even with the overhang of the trading loss, Dimon didn't lose his characteristic swagger. He emphasized the bank's strong earnings and growth throughout the company. In a call with reporters, he said he wasn't involved in the board's decision to cut his pay but that he respected it. When a reporter asked him for his "gut feeling," Dimon replied, "Nope, you're not gonna get it."

In its report, the bank's board of directors criticized the former leaders of the group responsible for the loss, the Chief Investment Office, saying they did not keep the board informed of potential problems and had used unapproved models for calculating risk.

When the Wall Street Journal first reported the losses, at least one CIO executive dismissed it, saying it was "based on an inaccurate market perception that the portfolio was unhedged," or not protected against loss, according to the board.

Bank executives issued their own report, saying that traders and managers didn't understand the risks they were taking, underestimated their potential losses and didn't adequately follow through when concerns were raised on the portfolio.

More regulatory sanctions could be in store. The bank has said it has received requests for information related to government inquiries and investigations by Congress, the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the U.K. Financial Services Authority, the state of Massachusetts and others. The bank said it is cooperating with these investigations.

JPMorgan's fourth-quarter earnings shot up 55 percent over the same period a year ago. The bank made $5.3 billion after paying preferred dividends, compared with $3.4 billion this time a year ago.

Per share, those earnings amounted to $1.40, blowing away the $1.16 expected by analysts polled by FactSet. The bank's stock rose 15 cents to $46.50 in early trading.

Revenue also beat Wall Street's forecasts, rising 10 percent to $24.4 billion, after stripping out an accounting charge. Mortgage originations jumped 33 percent.

Dimon said the housing market "has turned," echoing a statement he made in October after its third-quarter earnings report. He cited signs that point to an upturn, including housing prices that are rising in parts of the country and weakening foreclosures.

Earlier this month, JPMorgan and nine other banks agreed to spend a combined $8.5 billion to settle the government's charges that they had wrongfully foreclosed on struggling homeowners. The bank said it took an expense of about $700 million related to the settlement.

Westboro Baptist Church Nixes Aaron Swartz Funeral Protest Amid Anonymous Threat

The Westboro Baptist Church has abandoned plans to picket Aaron Swartz's funeral after Anonymous threatened to stand in the way of any such effort.

Upon the tragic suicide of the Reddit co-founder and Internet activist, WBC members announced plans to picket the event (as they are known to do).

However, when hacktivist group Anonymous and supporters showed up to block the WBC's picket line, the so-called "religious" group was not present.

A crowd showed up Tuesday at the funeral home in Highland Park, Ill., willing to stand in the way of WBC members to prevent them from getting close.

However, according to a tweet from Anonymous Twitter account @YourAnonNews, the WBC's lawyer contacted police to say WBC would not be there.

That wasn't what they were trumpeting just 48 hours prior.

Westboro Baptist Church on Sunday announced plans to protest Swarz's open funeral in a press release titled "GOD H8S Cyber Criminal THUGS."

?Cyber criminals are the latest face of this nation's and this world's raging at God and His Servants at WBC," reads the Westboro press release.

?Now the gloves are off, cyber rebels! ... We will picket the funeral, the LORD willing, so that in that Great Day of His Wrath, your blood is not on our hands."

In response, a video from an Anonymous-controlled YouTube account vowed that it would block any attempt by Westboro to picket Swartz's funeral:

"Before discussing the operation, there is something that needs to be said to Aaron's family and his friends: We're sorry," says the Anonymous statement.

"It is likely that our continuous condemnation and attacks against this cult is the very reason Aaron is being targeted by them. We would do anything to stop them."

"Aaron deserves peace and we will not allow this cult to overpower what should be the media's focus, the monsters at DOJ who ruthlessly targeted your son."

Swartz committed suicide in New York City on January 11. In July 2011, the 26-year-old was charged with felony hacking; he pleaded not guilty.

This is not the first time Anonymous and the WBC have tangled.

In December, after the WBC threatened to picket funerals of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting victims, Anonymous responded with a vengeance.

Anonymous hacked Westboro, taking over its Twitter, releasing member info and trolling spokeswoman Shirley Phelps-Roper relentlessly in particular.

US Condemns Morsi For Anti-Semitism, But Muslim Brotherhood Has Long Harbored Hatred For Israel

According to a video unearthed by the New York Times, Morsi asked his fellow Egyptians to ?nurse our children and our grandchildren on hatred? for Jews and Zionists.

In a subsequent television interview, he characterized Zionists as ?these bloodsuckers who attack the Palestinians, these warmongers, the descendants of apes and pigs. They have been fanning the flames of civil strife wherever they were throughout their history. They are hostile by nature.?

He also declared in the video: ?The land of Palestine will not be freed except through resistance. Who is our enemy? The Zionists. Who occupies our land? The Zionists. Who hates us? The Zionists. Who destroys our lands? The Zionists.?

Morsi also did not spare Western allies of Israel, spewing venom toward U.S. President Barack Obama, France, Britain and Germany.

In the 2010 interview?that was initially broadcast on Lebanon?s Al-Quds TV, Morsi blasted the Palestinian Authority as a creation of ?the Zionist and American enemies for the sole purpose of opposing the will of the Palestinian people.?

?Either [you accept] the Zionists and everything they want, or else it is war,? he fumed.

Morsi, who was elected president of Egypt last June under the banner of the Muslim Brotherhood party, has been urged by U.S. officials to repudiate his earlier remarks.

Jay Carney, spokesman for Obama, told reporters on Tuesday that Morsi?s inflammatory comments about Jews and Israel were ?deeply offensive? and raised the subject with figures in Cairo.

?We completely reject these statements, as we do any language that espouses religious hatred,? Carney said at a White House daily briefing.

Carney urged the Egyptian president to ?make clear that he respects people of all faiths and that this type of rhetoric is not acceptable or productive in a democratic Egypt.?

Carney offered an olive branch of sorts, by praising Morsi?s efforts to broker a cease-fire?-- and verbal cooperation with Obama -- during the Gaza-Israel conflict last year.

?Since taking office, President Morsi has reaffirmed Egypt?s commitment to its peace treaty with Israel, in both word and deed, and has proven willing to work with us toward shared objectives, including a cease-fire during the crisis in Gaza last year,? he said.

?These commitments are essential for our bilateral relations with Egypt, as well as the stability in the region, but we will always speak out against language that espouses religious hatred or encourages the use of violence.?

Similarly. Victoria Nuland, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, told reporters: ?We?ll also judge him [Morsi] by what he says, and we think that these comments should be repudiated and they should be repudiated firmly.?

Morsi, who has faced his own battles with liberals and secularists within his own country over the rights of women and minorities as envisioned in a new constitution, was widely hailed by the West for helping to broker a peace that ended a brief war between Hamas and Israel.

The U.S. has been counting on Morsi to maintain peaceful relations with Israel and to abide by a path of moderation with respect to domestic policies.

Indeed, Morsi has promised to uphold the Camp David peace treaties with Israel [even though The Muslim Brotherhood doesn?t even recognize Israel], likely in exchange for Western aid that he desperately needs to ease Egypt?s battered economy.

However, the revelation of his hateful remarks about Jews from three years ago may haunt him now.

?When the leader of a country has a history of statements demonizing Jews, and he does not do anything to correct it, it makes sense that many people in Israel would conclude that he cannot be trusted as a partner for peace,? Kenneth Jacobson, deputy national director of the Anti-Defamation League, told the New York Times.

But Morsi?s extreme rhetoric from three years ago is starkly contrasted by his rather moderate and pragmatic approach as president. Given the realities of Middle East politics, Morsi cannot appear to adopt too much of a conciliatory tone toward Israel. On the other side of the ledger, he cannot alienate Western powers who are allied with Israel too much either.

?What you believe in your heart is not the same as what you do in power,? said Shadi Hamid, research director of the Brookings Doha Center, to the Times.

?You are already starting to hear his opponents saying, ?Morsi is too close to the U.S. and doing its bidding in the Middle East.? It would be smart to attack him there because he may be vulnerable.?

However, virulent rhetoric against Israel and the Jews has long occupied a core value among the Muslim Brotherhood.

In late December 2012, the Simon Wiesenthal Center included Egypt?s Muslim Brotherhood among the worst perpetrators of anti-Semitic rhetoric last year.

The Center singled out the Brotherhood?s Mohammed Badie, who complained about ?Jewish control? and the Jews ?spreading of corruption on earth.?

Badie also condemned peace treaties with Israel.

?The enemy [Israel] knows nothing but the language of force,? he said. ?Be aware of the game of grand deception with which they depict peace accords."

Another top Brotherhood-linked official, Futouh Abd al-Nabi Mansour, was cited for asking Allah to ?destroy the Jews and their supporters? during a sermon attended by Morsi last October.

Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, told media that due to Egypt?s economic woes and domestic turmoil, Israel provides a handy distraction for the authorities.

"Every time there is domestic tension in the new Egypt, Israel and the Jews will be targeted, and every time the Egyptian street is tense or protests, the Muslim Brotherhood will bring the anti-Semitic genie out of the bottle," he said.

Israeli politician Danny Danon has demanded that the U.S. and the European Union punish Egypt by withholding financial aid.

"The direction of the new Egyptian government is very worrying, and we are following with great concern what is being said and done and what is not being done there against extremists," he said.

Insurance companies continue to drive M&A headlines just weeks into 2013, with Canada?s Sun Life Financial Inc. and Malaysia?s sovereign wealth fund striking a deal to buy a life insurer in the country.

As the WSJ reports, Sun Life and Khazanah Nasional Bhd. will jointly acquire 98% of CIMB Aviva Malaysia for 1.8 billion ringgit ($596) million, which is 49%-owned by U.K. insurer Aviva PLC and 51% by Malaysian lender CIMB Group Holdings.

Libya's police to create diplomatic security force

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Libya's Interior Ministry says it's creating a special security force to protect embassies and consulates.

Interior Ministry spokesman Magdi el-Urfi told The Associated Press on Monday that a brigadier general will lead the new force. It will be made up of former rebels who have been integrated into the nation's police force.

The North African nation's security sharply deteriorated after the ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011, and a new police force was formed.

The move to create a security force for foreign dignitaries comes after a wave of attacks against diplomats, including the killing of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens in the eastern city of Benghazi last September.

On Saturday, militants opened fire on the car of the Italian consul in Benghazi. He escaped unhurt.
