MAKHACHKALA, Russia (AP) ? The father of the two Boston bombing suspects said Sunday that he has postponed a trip from Russia to the United States because of poor health.
"I am really sick," Anzor Tsarnaev, 46, told The Associated Press. He said his blood pressure had spiked to dangerous levels.
Tsarnaev said at a news conference Thursday that he planned to leave that day or the next for the U.S. with the hope of seeing his younger son, who is under arrest, and burying his elder son, who was killed. His family, however, indicated later Thursday that the trip could be pushed back because he was not feeling well.
Tsarnaev confirmed on Sunday that he is staying in Chechnya, a province in southern Russia, but did not specify whether he was hospitalized. He is an ethnic Chechen and has relatives in Chechnya, although he and his family spent little time in Chechnya or anywhere else in Russia before moving to the U.S. a decade ago.
He and the suspects' mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, returned to Russia last year and settled in Makhachkala, the capital of neighboring Dagestan, where Tsarnaeva's relatives live.
During the past week, they were both questioned extensively by U.S. investigators who had traveled to Makhachkala from Moscow. They also were besieged by journalists who staked out their home.
Tsarnaev's family said last week that he intended to get to the U.S. by flying from Grozny, the Chechen capital, to Moscow. He and Tsarnaeva left Dagestan on Friday, but their whereabouts were unclear.

Many businesses have seen a dramatic increase in customers and profits because of Internet promotion. New customers can be attracted and you can communicate in ways that you could not before. Although Affiliate marketing may seem complicated, you can take advantage of your personal abilities to become a success.
Use popular websites to advertise your wares. Consider it an investment that will get you a lot of valuable exposure and lead to brand recognition. Ensure that the page you use has considerable traffic.
Think about your customers when making your site and promoting it. Is it truly user-friendly? Is reading the content fun? How easily and quickly can customers place an order? It is useless to work hard to bring customers to your site through SEO and then lose them (and a sale) because your website is dull or confusing.
One important component of Internet marketing is identifying and then correcting problems. You should have a clear goal in mind when you throw your doors open for business. If your business is useful to others, tell them precisely why this is the case. If you can assist users with their issues they will end up making a purchase from you and referring you to friends.
NOTE! Your internet marketing efforts should not be implemented without heavy forethought. Try to find someone successful in the field to emulate.
Think about what your customers, or potential customers, will expect to see when they visit your website. If you give them what they?re expecting, your marketing efforts will definitely pay off in increased sales. Ask for objective opinions on your site. This could be friends, peers or even your current clientele. Do your homework, document every step and create a beneficial site for all.
You should be able to guarantee that your system for ordering is secure. You can open an account with Paypal or a similar service that allows you to include a safe transaction system on your website. Before customers send their personal payment information to you, have them create a secure, password-protected account.
Emailing a catalog or a flyer with links for similar products is a good followup to customers who buy products or services from you. As an example, if a customer bought your ebook on how to knit, send them a link to the more advanced products you offer on knitting. By linking the products you advertise to the items your customer has purchased, you may increase your profits.
If you want to succeed in internet marketing you need to know what your competition is up to. It can be easy to look over the competition?s website and learn the features their site has. You can estimate the number of visitors they get and that can tell you how yours is doing in comparison.
NOTE! Keep your advertising budget from growing out of control. It is not wise to pay for a service that is not going to even help out your business.
You?ve seen how powerful Internet promotion is in terms of customer outreach. But you can also utilize it too, for ongoing conversations with your customers. The Internet has opened up a whole panoply of new ways for customers and businesses to connect with each other. If you use these ideas, you will connect with customers and make a impact on the Web marketing industry.
OK, we?re pretty much done for today?
I?ll go ahead and come up with some additional marketing your business online strategies for you in about 24 hours. If you feel comfortable doing so, leave your questions in the large field below and I?ll come up with ideas on what can be done to get you the right answers.
Take care and chat to you the next time.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp, an acquisition target of both Japan's SoftBank Corp and Dish Network Corp, posted a smaller than expected quarterly loss, even as it saw steep customer losses from the Nextel network it is shutting down.
Sprint, the No. 3 U.S. mobile service provider, on Wednesday recorded a first-quarter loss of $643 million, or 21 cents per share, compared with a loss of $863 million, or 29 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. Analysts had expected a loss of 33 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Revenue rose to $8.79 billion from $8.73 billion. Analysts had expected $8.71 billion.
Sprint reported a subscriber loss of 560,000 for the quarter compared with expectations for a loss of almost 525,000 from five analysts contacted by Reuters.
The company said it now expects 2013 adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortization at the high-end of its previously announced target of between $5.2 billion and $5.5 billion, excluding costs of closing strategic transactions.
Sprint's board is currently evaluating a $25.5 billion acquisition offer from No. 2 U.S. satellite TV service Dish, which challenged Sprint's October agreement to sell 70 percent of the company to SoftBank for $20.1 billion.

A protein which is intimately involved in cancer-promoting cell signaling also keeps a key component of the signaling pathway tied down and inactive, a team led by scientists from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center reports this week in Nature Structural Molecular Biology.
Shc, pronounced "schick," plays a key role in activating signals which lead to cell proliferation (and cancer) when cells are stimulated, however it unexpectedly turns out to be a tumor-suppressor, keeping Erk under wraps when a cell is less active, said senior author John Ladbury, Ph.D., professor in MD Anderson's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
"Shc is a checkpoint to prevent out of control cell growth, binding to Erk when a cell is not being stimulated by growth factors," Ladbury said. "Otherwise, the lower-level background signaling that's always present in a cell would be uncontrolled."
Keeping Erk in check while the cell idles
Overexpression of Erk occurs in many types of cancer, including ovarian and prostate cancer and Hodgkin lymphoma, so cellular control of its activity is important.
In the absence of external stimulation by growth factors, cells remain active but lower levels of cell signaling occur, which Ladbury compares to a car idling, ready to roll. Under these conditions control mechanisms are in place to prevent the cell kicking into gear. Shc turns out to be one of these controllers.
"We're essentially looking at the cell in a resting, but ready, state," Ladbury said. "I would argue that's probably more like a cell behaves in tissue, it's not normally getting a slug of growth factors as is often the way when we investigate signaling in experiments in the lab. There's still a lot going on in the cell, basically background activity."
These findings point to a number of therapeutic possibilities, including the measurement of Shc concentration levels as a diagnostic tool and of finding small molecule drugs that block growth-factor signaling to Shc, keeping it bound to Erk, Ladbury noted.
Growth factors provide double boost for Erk
When the appropriate growth factor receptor is stimulated Erk is activated in the MAP Kinase pathway. It dives into the cell nucleus and turns on a variety of genes, actions that contribute to cancer proliferation, blood vessel production and metastasis when signaling is out of control.
When receptor tyrosine kinases on the cell surface connect with growth factors, they normally send a signal via Shc that sets off a chain of actions leading to Erk activation. Ladbury and colleagues looked at Shc's connections to epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling.
The team found in mammalian cell lines that:
Shc-Erk connection confirmed
Ladbury and colleagues then tested their results in the C.Elegans, a worm model frequently employed in biological research. Both Shc and Erk are greatly similar between humans and the worms.
Experiments showed that Shc blocks Erk function by sequestering it away from the Ras-Raf-Mek MAPK pathway in the worms. Without the Shc-Erk connection, the MAPK pathway is activated, causing excessive Erk activation.
EGFR stimulation not only sets off the normal activation of Erk via Shc and the MAPK pathway, Ladbury said, but also frees Erk for greater availability for activation by breaking the tie to Shc.
Co-authors with Ladbury are first author Kin Man Suen and Chi-Chuan Lin, Ph.D., Fernando Melo, Ph.D., Zamal Ahmed, Ph.D., and Stefan Arold, Ph.D., all of MD Anderson's Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Roger George, Ph.D., of the London Research Institute of Cancer Research UK; Eleanor Biggs, of the University of Bath, Bath, UK; and Melanie Drake and Swathi Arur, Ph.D., of MD Anderson's Department of Genetics.
Suen is a graduate student in The University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, which is run jointly by MD Anderson and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Ladbury and Arold also are affiliated with the Center for Biomolecular Structure and Function at MD Anderson.

Chicago (April 22, 2013) Sodium intake around the world is well in excess of physiological needs (1) and public health authorities agree that chronic excess sodium intake can increase blood pressure and the risk of heart attack and stroke (2). However, despite recommendations to lower sodium consumption over the last decade, actual intake continues to rise.
Rising Sodium Intake
Research supported by Tate & Lyle was presented today at the American Society for Nutrition Experimental Biology (3) conference in Boston which indicates that in the United States, sodium intake has been on an upward trendincreasing by 63 mg/day every 2 years from 2001 until 2010. The study, commissioned by global food ingredient provider Tate & Lyle, used data from the What We Eat in America (WWEIA)/National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to assess overall sodium intake and sources of sodium in the diets of those two years of age and older from 2001 to 2010.
Based upon this recent analysis, the largest contributor of sodium to the diet was grains and grain products (i.e., breads, cereals, salty snacks); followed by meat, poultry, fish and mixtures; vegetables; and milk and milk products. Sodium intake from meat, poultry, fish and mixtures increased the most while sodium from grains remained consistent.
"This research shows us that despite public health efforts to decrease sodium intake, actual intake has continued to increase over the last 10 years and solutions to help decrease dietary intake are greatly needed," states the study's lead author, Victor Fulgoni, PhD, Senior Vice President of Nutrition Impact, LLC, a food and nutrition consulting company.
Sodium Reduction Innovation: SODA-LO Salt Microspheres
Several studies have shown that a reduction in salt intake is one of the most cost-effective interventions to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in both developed and developing countries (4,5). Innovative solutions for reducing sodium content in the food supply may help meet public health goals.
SODA-LO Salt Microspheres, an ingredient offered by Tate & Lyle for food manufacturers, is a salt-reduction ingredient that tastes, labels and functions like salt because it is real salt. It can reduce sodium by 25-50 percent in food applications that are some of the largest contributors of sodium to the diet such as bread and salty snacks. It does this through its patent-pending technology that turns standard salt crystals into free-flowing, hollow salt microspheres that increase the perception of saltiness on the tongue.
"Meeting consumer taste preferences by using effective food ingredients to lower sodium content while maintaining the foods' perceived salt intensity is one strategy for reducing global sodium intake," said Priscilla Samuel, PhD, Director of Global Nutrition for Tate & Lyle.
"Tate & Lyle is committed to delivering innovative ingredients to help consumers reduce their sodium intake and meet their nutrition, health and wellness needs every day. Our company is committed to investing in innovation and research, and in developing ingredientslike SODA-LO Salt Microspheresthat can be incorporated into a wide variety of great tasting food and beverage solutions."

NEW YORK (AP) ? When it comes to the NFL draft, getting tricked into an online relationship with a girl that didn't exist ended up being the least of Manti Te'o's problems.
That stinker of a game he played against Alabama? Now that's an issue. Same goes for that less than blazing 40-yard dash he ran at the combine.
Considering all the news involving Te'o since the calendar flipped to 2013, it seems like forever since he was leading Notre Dame to the national title game, playing linebacker like an All-American and cleaning up on the college football awards circuit.
Combine the good, bad and bizarre, and when Te'o gets selected might be the most intriguing part of the NFL draft that starts Thursday in New York.
"There's no doubt he'll be one of the story lines of the night," said former NFL player personnel executive Phil Savage, who works as the executive director of the Senior Bowl.
It's unlikely that Te'o, who turned down a chance to attend the draft, will be off the board during the first 15 or so picks, but come the back-half of the first round, expect plenty of Te'o talk.
Te'o figured to be a highly scrutinized player heading into this draft even before he became a tabloid news and daytime talk show fixation.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pound middle linebacker was the unquestioned leader of a Notre Dame defense that ranked among the best in the country and propelled the Fighting Irish to an undefeated regular season.
Te'o led the team in tackles and made seven interceptions, more than any linebacker in the country. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting behind Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, and took home a trophy case-full of other awards.
At his best, Te'o was being touted by some draft prognosticators as a high first-round pick.
Then Notre Dame played Alabama for the national championship.
The Crimson Tide crushed the Irish 42-14 in South Florida and Te'o looked overwhelmed facing Alabama's array of future NFL draft picks along the line and in the backfield.
You could practically hear Te'o tumbling down draft boards with every missed tackle.
"No question he played poorly against Alabama," NFL draft consultant and former Dallas Cowboys general manager Gil Brandt said.
Then things got weird. It was revealed that Te'o's girlfriend, who supposedly died during the season, never existed. He had been the victim of an elaborate hoax. Catfished.
Aside from being publicly humiliated, the episode called into question Te'o's character, which until then had seemed exemplary. It was another hit to his draft stock.
The final blow came at the combine, where Te'o ran the 40-yard dash in 4.82 seconds, making him one of the slowest linebackers there. He did better at Notre Dame's pro day about a month later, but the damage was done.
Te'o had seemingly gone from surefire first-rounder to maybe a second-round pick. Or at least that's the way it might have looked to those who follow the around-the-clock draft coverage on the Internet and TV these days.
Not so for Brandt, who has Te'o rated as the 20th-best player available.
"I wish he was just a little faster," Brandt said. Though his scouting report of Te'o also includes, "plays faster than his times."
Te'o's lack of straight-line speed could be a problem in man-to-man coverage, but both Brandt and Savage agree Te'o has shown good enough instincts to hold up well in zone coverage. As long he isn't limited to playing only running downs, Te'o can warrant a first-round selection.
"I think in some respects he's going to end up being drafted in the range that would have been expected regardless of what had transpired after the regular season," said Savage, who was general manager of the Browns from 2005-08 and also worked with the Ravens and Eagles.
"The vast majority of player personnel people saw him as a good player, but not as a great player."
Savage compared Te'o to D'Qwell Jackson of the Browns and DeMeco Ryans of the Eagles. Both were drafted early in the second round.
"(Te'o) did not have the explosive burst and hitting ability that you saw in Ray Lewis, Jon Beason, Jonathan Vilma or Luke Keuchly," Savage said.
Keuchly was taken ninth overall last season by Carolina and went on to become the defensive rookie of the year.
As far as character questions related to the fake girlfriend hoax, Brandt said that issue was put to rest when Te'o answered dozens of questions from reporters at the combine.
Brandt said he spent time with Te'o at the combine and came away impressed.
"I thought he was a very bright guy, quality individual. Everything about him I thought was upscale," Brandt said.
Savage said he didn't get a chance to meet Te'o, who turned down an invite to the Senior Bowl, but heard that his interviews with team officials at the combine went well ? and that teams did plenty of digging into his background.
Bears GM Phil Emery told the Chicago Tribune: "I found Manti to be a very good person, a very squared-away guy."
Savage figures there will be an initial media "circus" for whatever team drafts Te'o, and that team needs a plan to deal with it. Some teams might not feel it's worth the hassle, but ultimately the decision on whether to draft Te'o won't be much different from any other prospect.
"The majority of teams have evaluated him," Savage said, "and if he is the next best player on their board when it's their pick, they'll take him."

President Barack Obama has made both issues foreign policy priorities for his second term and Kerry was pushing them in meetings with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu.
On a trip to Israel last month, Obama secured a pledge from Turkish and Israeli leaders to normalize ties that broke down after a 2010 Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that killed eight Turks and a Turkish-American. However, the rapprochement has been slow, sparking concerns that Turkey may be backsliding on its commitment.
U.S. officials say they are hopeful that a meeting this week of Israeli and Turkish diplomats to discuss Israeli compensation for victims of the flotilla raid will jumpstart the process of restoring full diplomatic relations and exchanging ambassadors between the two countries that Washington sees as key strategic partners in the volatile Middle East.
Kerry said at a news conference that he had a "prolonged and constructive" discussion with Davutoglu, about "the importance of completing the task with respect to the renewal of relations between Turkey and Israel."
Kerry said he believes that Davutoglu and Turkey's prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan "are deeply committed to fulfilling all of the obligations of that understanding. I think they are committed to doing so."
Erdogan is due to visit Obama at the White House on May 16 and U.S. officials are keen to see substantive process by then.
However, Erdogan's plans to visit the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip sometime in May after his trip to Washington have raised concerns. The State Department has said such a journey would be unhelpful. Both Israel and Abbas, whose Palestinian Authority is based in the West Bank, are opposed.
With Abbas, Kerry was talking about ways to improve the Palestinians' living conditions as a confidence-building measure to improve the atmosphere for a resumption in stalled peace talks with Israel.
Kerry has said he fears there is only a two- or three-year window of opportunity to reach a deal on a two-state solution that would end the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict and wants to move as quickly as possible. He has met with Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu several times already to that end since becoming secretary of state.
Kerry was in Istanbul primarily to attend an international conference on Syria that began on Saturday afternoon and stretched into early Sunday morning as participants debated how best to boost aid to rebels trying to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime.
At the conference, he announced that the Obama administration would double its non-lethal assistance to the Syrian opposition with an additional $123 million in supplies that could include for the first time armored vehicles, body armor, night vision goggles and other defensive military supplies.
"I can't tell you how quickly it will change things on the ground," Kerry said Sunday. "I can promise you that as soon as I return to Washington, I am going to press as hard as I can" to get it to the opposition within a matter of weeks.
"This has to happen quickly, it has to have an impact," he added.
The additional aid, which brings total non-lethal U.S. assistance to the opposition to $250 million since the fighting began more than two years ago, "underscores the United States' firm support for a political solution to the crisis in Syria and for the opposition's advancement of an inclusive, tolerant vision for a post-Assad Syria," Kerry said.
The U.S. pledge was the only tangible, public offer of new international support at the meeting of the foreign ministers of the 11 main countries supporting the opposition and fell well short of what the opposition has been appealing for: weapons and direct military intervention to stop the violence that has killed more than 70,000 people.
The Syrian National Coalition is seeking drone strikes on sites from which the regime has fired missiles, the imposition of no-fly zones and protected humanitarian corridors to ensure the safety of civilians.
While pleased with the U.S. moves, the opposition appeared deeply disappointed, especially as it lost some ground in the latest clashes with Syrian troops backed by pro-government gunmen capturing at least one village in a strategic area near the Lebanese border.
"We appreciate the limited support given by the international community, but it is not sufficient," it said in a statement released at the end of the conference. "We call on the international community to be more forthcoming and unreserved to fulfill its responsibilities in extending support that is needed by the Syrian people."
With the exception of the United States, none of the participants offered new assistance, although European nations are considering changes to an arms embargo that would allow weapons transfers to the Syrian opposition. But European Union action is unlikely before the current embargo is set to expire in late May.
Obama has said he has no plans to send weapons or give lethal aid to the rebels, despite pressure from Congress, some administration advisers and the appeals from opposition.
There are no plans to change that policy, although U.S. officials say they are not opposed to other countries sending arms, as long as the recipients have been properly vetted.

BOSTON Heart disease and approximately half of all strokes are the results of advanced atherosclerosis with damaged endothelium, the inner lining of blood vessels. In 2009, the direct and indirect annual cost of heart disease and stroke was approximately $312.6 billion. Projections are for the total cost of heart disease to increase from $523 to $1.126 billion from 2013 to 2030. And by 2030, it is expected that there will be more than 148 million of the US population would have heart disease. Development of new technologies for assessing and treating endothelium damage will help reduce that financial burden as reduce the human health burden resulting from atherosclerosis.
Dr. Hua Pan, Research Instructor in Medicine at Dr. Samuel Wickline's Laboratory in Washington University School of Medicine, investigated quantitative evaluation and developed novel therapies for endothelial barrier damage. The evolution and severity of endothelium damage in advanced atherosclerotic plaque remain unknown, in part because quantifiable methods are lacking for its in vivo assessment. Her latest study is the first to demonstrate, in a well-established atherosclerosis mouse model, ApoE deficient mice, a multifunctional perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanoparticle (NP) for quantification of endothelial damage as well as targeted anti-inflammatory drug delivery to the endothelium damage site.
The study, conducted in ApoE deficient mice, quantified endothelium damage by using PFC NP retained in mouse aorta as surrogate. It demonstrated the evolution and severity of endothelium damage in correlation to the length of the animal fat-diet consumption. Moreover, the same PFC NP loaded with anti-inflammatory drug, NF-?B inhibitor, down-regulated inflammation. Dr. Wickline noted, this finding provided a new avenue for defining disease stage and for following therapy to heal dangerous atherosclerotic plaques.
Her findings will be presented April 22, 2013 during Experimental Biology 2013 in Boston, MA.

Rising number of rape cases in our society proves that something is wrong at a very large and basic level. It is clear after the brutal rape of five years old kid in Delhi that poverty, lack of education, revealing clothes, use of mobile phones, going out at night, late marriage are not the reasons of rape which were cited again and again by many renowned personalities and even common man. Rape is actually done by sick people who are physically healthy and fine but mentally not. Sick mentality is engulfing every man who does not remain in his senses and results in such a heinous crime.
Society and police is blamed, media becomes super active, protests by people, anger and much more than this is done and seen every time but without a result. All this is not at all changing the society the way it should. Down the line self control through self improvement is the need of the day which will improve one?s life and way of thinking.
Spirituality
Be spiritual not to show off but in reality. Living close to God will help you to stay away from negative thoughts. Make a routine of getting up early in the morning to offer prayers. If you know the technique of meditation then perform this or learn it as it helps in getting rid of negative and unwanted thoughts. Do not run after worldly gurus but be close to that supreme divine power. Try getting his positive energy.
Inspirational Environment
Environment in which you live has a profound impact on your personality and way of thinking. Even if you are living in a single room or a small home you must create an inspirational environment. Keep it clean and paste nice thoughts on walls so that you can see and feel these day and night.
Honesty
?Honesty is the best Policy? so be honest in everything you do and say.
Be tender
Before giving pain to others think what would it feel if same would happen to you? Do hurt anyone neither physically nor emotionally. If you are a person who is not at peace then you have to train your mind for the same. Many times your mind wander and you end up doing a wrong act. But you have to keep your emotions under your control rather than coming under their control.
Bring in a routine
Routine in life is the most important aspect of self improvement. Start your day as early as possible. This will improve your life as well as productivity. Ensure to follow a routine in life.
Stop Blaming
Most of us have the habit of blaming either God or other person for all our misfortune. It is not they but you who is responsible for all the wrong. So stop blaming and accept if you are wrong. Try to improve yourself for a better life.
Set a challenge
Setting up a challenge in life means you will work towards it and remain busy. Keeping yourself busy means not letting negative thought to come. Healthy competition always helps in self improvement and the best way to grow.
Quit bad habits
Everyone has bad habits. For self improvement you have to quit bad habits. Note down all your bad habits and start working on these.
Avoid bad company
Your friends show your personality and over a period of time you start behaving like them. Negative thoughts grow profoundly if you have bad people around you. Identify such people around you and avoid them.
Do not watch obscenity
It is better not to watch TV or any other media as it is full of obscenity. Some people get influenced by obscenity to such an extent that for day and night they keep on thinking about this. With such a mentality they do what they should not. So stay away from obscenity.
If you get success in controlling your mind then self improvement is not a difficult thing as it follows mind control.

Twitter rolls out #Music app for iPhone and web, with iTunes, Spotify and Rdio integration. Interesting, I?m not sure it?s for me, and how it?s not Just Another Way To Advertise. I can definitely see this as a way to move in on the ?myspace music? mindspace that I think still exists, and maybe a bit on band?s facebook pages as well.
We?ll see how this goes.

What's the difference between the ceremonial funeral that will be held for the late prime minister and the state funeral her supporters wanted for her?

The somber early morning march was a dress rehearsal for the Wednesday funeral of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, an elaborate and expensive ceremony that has touched off new debate about how the country should eulogize one of its most divisive leaders.
Immediately following her death last Monday, supporters began to clamor for Mrs. Thatcher to be afforded a so-called state funeral: an elaborate ceremony generally reserved for the country?s monarchs.?
Thatcher wouldn?t have been the first modern prime minister afforded such an honor ? Winston Churchill and the major prime ministers of the late 19th?century all had them ? but it would have been a ritzy departure from the ceremonies celebrating most of her predecessors.
Thatcher herself foresaw the controversy her memorial might inspire, however, and made clear before she died that she did not want a state funeral. So instead she will be commemorated Wednesday with a ?ceremonial funeral? ? one notch lower on the hierarchy of British official burials.
Here?s what you need to know about the Iron Lady's funeral.?
Practically speaking, almost nothing. Both state and ceremonial funerals are elaborate, expensive affairs (Thatcher's will cost an estimated 10 million pounds, or $15 million) involving a military procession and a funeral at one of London?s eminent old chapels.?
Thatcher?s casket will follow a winding route through central London ? flanked by about 700 military personnel ? beginning at the Palace of Westminster, continuing on to the Royal Air Force chapel, St. Clement Danes, and ending at St. Paul?s Cathedral. (You can see a minute-by-minute breakdown of the events here.)
It?s the same route followed by Winston Churchill?s casket in his state funeral, with a very similar supporting cast. So what gave Churchill?s ceremony the coveted ?state? label? Two things.
First, the gun carriage containing Mr. Churchill?s coffin was drawn by Royal Navy sailors, while Thatcher?s will be drawn by horses.
Second, and perhaps more essentially, a state funeral requires parliamentary approval, while a ceremonial funeral requires only the consent of the monarch. Before her death, Thatcher nixed the idea of a state funeral for herself in large part because of the divisive debate its approval was likely to stir up in Parliament, the Guardian reported last week.
Britain?s only 20th century prime minister to receive the honor was Winston Churchill, buried January 31, 1965. The BBC described the elaborate pomp and circumstance of that day.
The procession took that most ancient road that runs from the Palace of Westminster to the steps of the cathedral of St Paul. It is a road that half the history of England seems to have taken, on its way to a crowning or to a public and ignoble death, to murder or be murdered, to raise revolt, to seek a fortune, or to be buried. The route was lined with young soldiers, their heads bowed over their automatic rifles in ceremonious grief. The bands played old and slow tunes. The drums were draped in black. The staffs of the drum-majors were veiled. They moved slowly, steadily, at a curiously inexorable pace, and it looked as if nothing could ever stop them. The great crowd watched with an eloquent and absolute silence.
Before Churchill, three other prime ministers received state funeral honors in modern times: the Duke of Wellington in 1852, Viscount Palmerston in 1865, and William Gladstone in 1898. But the practice largely fell out of service in the 20th century.
They're often given to important royals and there have been two in the past decade and a half. Princess Diana had one when she died suddenly in a car crash in 1997, as did Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who died in 2002. Both of those ceremonies took place in Westminster Abbey.
That's a matter of individual choice. Most have opted for a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. Labour Party Prime Minister Harold Wilson had one in 1995, and Edward Heath in 2005.
But the family of Harold Macmillan, Conservative Party prime minister from 1957 to 1963, held a private funeral in January 1987 at a church in the village of Horsted Keynes where he often worshiped. Just 200 people ? Thatcher among them ? attended.
By any estimation, Thatcher?s sendoff will be a slightly more audacious affair.?
