MIAMI ? LeBron James and longtime girlfriend Savannah Brinson are engaged.
With a number of teammates and close friends looking on, the Miami Heat star surprised his high school sweetheart Saturday night by dropping to one knee and proposing.
And yes, she said yes.
"It was beautiful," Heat teammate Chris Bosh said. "I told him, `Good luck.' It was nice. It was real nice."
A representative for James confirmed the news to The Associated Press on Sunday morning, a few hours after close friend Chris Paul and Heat owner Micky Arison were among those tweeting their congratulations.
James popped the question at a party to celebrate both New Year's Eve and his 27th birthday, which was Friday. Heat teammate Dwyane Wade was in charge of holding the ring until the big moment, and a group of about 50 guests toasted the happy couple.
"A special night," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
James and Brinson are the parents of two sons.
"I had no idea it was coming," Bosh said. "I just heard some commotion, and yeah, there it was. It was nice. It was real cool."
No wedding date was announced. James and the Heat were playing host to the Charlotte Bobcats on Sunday. James was expected to address the news for the first time after the game.

The only sticking point was always the price, which, at a minimum of ?400, was about as competitive as a three-wheel van at Silverstone. They are getting cheaper, however, with the cost of the Sony Tablet S falling by ?50.
The UK price of the Sony Tablet S was actually cut in the run up to Christmas, although this was originally thought to be a short-term saving to boost festive sales. If the US market is anything to go by, however, this may turn out to be a permanent saving, with the price across the pond falling by $100.
There does, however, seem to be a little confusion about whether or not the price cut is part of a January sale promotion or representative of a long-term saving. If the inbox of?Beta News editor Joe Wilcox is anything to go by, the saving is permanent, despite the US store listing the tablets as sale items.
As CNET points out, the price cut points towards a worrying trend for non-Apple tablets - albeit a positive one for consumers - with more and more high-end tablet manufacturers resorting to price cuts. RIM's Blackberry PlayBook suffered the biggest drop in value in recent months, while Hewlett-Packard almost went under thanks to the poorly judged launch price of its Touchpad.
With Amazon's relatively cheap Kindle Fire yet to be released in the UK, we expect even more tablet savings in the coming months.

Alamogordo kicks off centennial celebrations Jan. 6

Some political cartoonists portrayed the strengths of the territories seeking statehood. In this 1901 cartoon, Oklahoma is a farmer and Arizona a rancher, while New Mexico's mining promise is emphasized in the hard-working miner.
After a year of planning, Otero County is ready to embrace New Mexico's centennial year.
With a different local organization taking the lead every week, Alamogordo is in for a year-long party. To kick off events, the Tularosa Basin Historical Society will raise a replica of the 47-star flag at 10:30 a.m. Friday.
At 1:35 p.m. Jan. 6, 1912, President William Howard Taft signed New Mexico's statehood bill. In Alamogordo, the birthday celebration takes place in front of the Alamogordo Museum of History beside the Chamber of Commerce at 1301 White Sands Blvd.
Secretary of State Dianna Duran will be at the event and present the keynote address focusing on her family's legacy in the Tularosa Basin. Jean Lee and her daughter, Linda, will present a short history of ranching and the railroad in the area. Music will be provided by Don Thorp and Randy Burroughs will serve as the master of ceremonies.
The flag, raised at 10:30 a.m. by the Alamogordo High School JROTC, is a copy of the real thing one of the few 47-star flags ever made that is inside the museum.
TBHS began in 1964 and has a history of collecting and displaying many important artifacts from this area.
Found in California on the wall of a bar, where it had been ignored by patrons sipping spirits between 1876 and 1982, the 47-star flag was returned to New Mexico by the tavern's owner, Ward Topping.
In September 1998, Topping returned the flag to his hometown of Alamogordo and donated it to the museum.
New Mexico's introduction into statehood had a time frame almost missed by the blink of an eye. On Jan. 6, New Mexico entered the Union as the 47th state. Arizona quickly followed as the 48th state on Feb. 14. Manufacturers had a little more than one month to mass produce New Mexico flags.
But some started early.
"It seems to me a few manufacturers jumped the gun," said Diana de Santis, a curator at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe. That quick jump also resulted in New Mexico's flag never being official, she said in a 1998 interview with the Daily News.
A 47-star flag, donated by a Wisconsin woman in the late 1980s, is stored at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe but can be seen only upon request. The one in Santa Fe is another one of the very few known to be in existence. A flag does not actually become "official" until July 4, so the 47-star version was never officially recognized by the United States.
Volunteers at the Alamogordo History Museum will be on hand at Friday's event to sell commemorative calenders and T-shirts, and there will also be free items for those who participate. Refreshments will also be served and the centennial quilt will be on display.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (CBS4)- The woman who pretended to have cancer to get money from a Colorado police charity has been sentenced to 6 years probation.
Julie Jane Martin was sentenced to probation, 90 days in jail and ordered to pay $10,425 in restitution on Friday. Martin, 38, pleaded guilty in October for conning the Cops Fighting Cancer Society out of more than $10,000.
Martin began conning the organization in 2009 and continued over the course of a 15-month period.
Martin claimed to have cancer, Leukemia, cervical cancer, spinal tumors, chest tumors and kidney tumors. She told foundation members that she was under going treatment in Colorado at one of the local hospitals.
The Cops Fighting Cancer foundation assisted Martin by paying for her lodging and airline tickets to go back and forth from her home in Portland, Ore. The foundation also paid for other health-related expenses.
Martin also participated in a foundation video showing real life cancer victims telling their stories about how they have been helped by the Cops Fighting Cancer foundation.
