Red wine may reduce breast cancer risk

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Red wine may reduce one risk factor for breast cancer, challenging the widely-held belief that alcohol increases breast cancer, U.S. researchers say.
Study co-author Dr. Chrisandra Shufelt, assistant director of the Women's Heart Center at the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute, said doctors long ago determined all alcohol increases the body's estrogen levels, fostering the growth of cancer cells.
The study, published online ahead of the April print edition of the Journal of Women's Health, found chemicals in the skins and seeds of red grapes slightly lowered estrogen levels while elevating testosterone among premenopausal women who drank 8 ounces of red wine nightly for about a month. The effect was not found in white wine.
The study involved 36 women were randomized to drink either Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay daily for almost a month, then switched to the other type of wine. Blood was collected twice each month to measure hormone levels.
Study co-author Dr. Glenn D. Braunstein said the results do not mean white wine increases the risk of breast cancer but grapes used in those varieties may lack the same protective elements found in reds.

U.S. government asks scientists to keep some secrets about their bird flu research

The viruses that cause ?bird flu? spread easily among chickens, ducks and turkeys, often causing serious illness and sometimes death. These viruses don?t usually spread to humans, but it happens. Understandably, scientists want to know more about the virus and how it spreads to try to prevent a disaster. In two recent studies, scientists demonstrated how the virus could be changed to make it more infectious.
?But the government now fears terrorists could use the information. So?the scientists and the journals that would publish these findings have been strongly asked to keep some of the details secret ? a process known as censorship.

If you thought you'd died and gone to cameo heaven when James Franco agreed to play a young Hugh Hefner in Linda Lovelace's biopic, 'Lovelace,' 2012 is proving -- three days in -- that it is a year full of surprises. Word has it that the freshly detached Demi Moore will be playing a small role of activist Gloria Steinem. (Insert Ms. joke here.)
'Lovelace,' from 'HOWL' directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman, is one of two Linda Lovelace biopics in development. Director Matthew Wilder has long been developing 'Inferno,' which was initially set to star Lindsay Lohan as the famous porn star; now Malin Akerman is attached to the lead role in that film. As for 'Lovelace,' Lohan's former Mean Girl cohort Amanda Seyfried is playing the titular actress, with Peter Sarsgaard as her abusive pornographer husband, Chuck Traynor. Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, Sharon Stone round out the cast.
Steinem wrote the article, "The Real Lovelace," which details the porn star's relationship with Traynor in Ms. Magazine. So, in movie version, this probably translates to a hippie-dressed Demi slamming down a stack of papers and saying something like, "America needs to hear her story!"
'Lovelace' has also reportedly added Eric Roberts and Adam Brody to its ever-growing ensemble. The former 'O.C.' star will play Lovelace's onscreen 'Deep Throat' partner Harry Reems.

Harrisburg Mayor Eliminates Health Benefits For 2 New Employees
HARRISBURG, Pa. ?? WGAL.com
Harrisburg City Council and the mayor are at odds over a new issue just days into 2012.
Moments after Sandra Reid was sworn in and council elected new officers on Tuesday, Mayor Linda Thompson signed an executive order eliminating health care for the new council member along with the new city treasurer.
Thompson said she must find ways to trim costs.
"I'm looking at making sure the city is financially stable and one way we do it is get rid of budget absorbers and legacy costs that you can no longer afford to do," Thompson said.
City council members said it?s retaliation after they eliminated her communications director and ombudsman to save $140,000.
They plan to look for ways to restore health benefits to the new employees.

Movie sword-fight master Bob Anderson dies at 89 (AP)
LONDON ? Olympic fencer and movie sword master Bob Anderson appeared in some of film's most famous dueling scenes ? though few viewers knew it.
Anderson, who has died at age 89, donned Darth Vader's black helmet and fought light saber battles in two of the three original "Star Wars" films, "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi."
Anderson, who worked with actors from Errol Flynn to Antonio Banderas during five decades as a sword master, fight director and stunt performer, died early New Year's Day at an English hospital, the British Academy of Fencing said Monday.
Vader, "Star Wars'" intergalactic arch-villain, was voiced by James Earl Jones and played by six foot six (1.98 meter) former weightlifter David Prowse, but Anderson stepped in during the key fight scenes.
"David Prowse wasn't very good with a sword and Bob couldn't get him to do the moves," said Anderson's former assistant, Leon Hill. "Fortunately Bob could just don the costume and do it himself."
The scenes worked beautifully, although Anderson, then nearing 60, was several inches shorter than Prowse.
Few knew of Anderson's role until Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, said in a 1983 interview that "Bob Anderson was the man who actually did Vader's fighting."
"It was always supposed to be a secret, but I finally told (director) George (Lucas) I didn't think it was fair any more," Hamill told Starlog magazine. "Bob worked so bloody hard that he deserves some recognition. It's ridiculous to preserve the myth that it's all done by one man."
Robert James Gilbert Anderson was born in Hampshire, southern England, in 1922, and was drawn to fencing from an early age.
"I never took up the sword," he said in an interview for the 2009 documentary "Reclaiming the Blade." "I think the sword took me up."
Anderson joined the Royal Marines before World War II, teaching fencing aboard warships and winning several combined services titles in the sport.
He served in the Mediterranean during the war, later trained as a fencing coach and represented Britain at the 1952 Olympics and the 1950 and 1953 world championships.
In the 1950s, Anderson became coach of Britain's national fencing team, a post he held until the late 1970s. He later served as technical director of the Canadian Fencing Association.
His first film work was staging fights and coaching Flynn on swashbuckler "The Master of Ballantrae" in 1952.
He went on to become one of the industry's most sought after stunt performers, fight choreographers and sword masters, working on movies including the James Bond adventures "From Russia With Love" and "Die Another Day"; fantasy "The Princess Bride"; Banderas action romps "The Mask of Zorro" and "The Legend of Zorro"; and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
Fencing academy president Philip Bruce said Anderson was "truly one of our greatest fencing masters and a world-class film fight director and choreographer."
Hill remembered him as "a splendid man, a great man who gave so much to fencing that can never be repaid."
Anderson is survived by his wife Pearl and three children. Funeral details were not immediately available.
