Fructose has different effect than glucose on brain regions that regulate appetite
Jan. 1, 2013 ? In a study examining possible factors regarding the associations between fructose consumption and weight gain, brain magnetic resonance imaging of study participants indicated that ingestion of glucose but not fructose reduced cerebral blood flow and activity in brain regions that regulate appetite, and ingestion of glucose but not fructose produced increased ratings of satiety and fullness, according to a preliminary study published in the January 2 issue of JAMA.
"Increases in fructose consumption have paralleled the increasing prevalence of obesity, and high-fructose diets are thought to promote weight gain and insulin resistance. Fructose ingestion produces smaller increases in circulating satiety hormones compared with glucose ingestion, and central administration of fructose provokes feeding in rodents, whereas centrally administered glucose promotes satiety," according to background information in the article. "Thus, fructose possibly increases food-seeking behavior and increases food intake." How brain regions associated with fructose- and glucose-mediated changes in animal feeding behaviors translates to humans is not completely understood.
Kathleen A. Page, M.D., of Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn., and colleagues conducted a study to examine neurophysiological factors that might underlie associations between fructose consumption and weight gain. The study included 20 healthy adult volunteers who underwent two magnetic resonance imaging sessions in conjunction with fructose or glucose drink ingestion. The primary outcome measure for the study was the relative changes in hypothalamic (a region of the brain) regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) after glucose or fructose ingestion.
The researchers found that there was a significantly greater reduction in hypothalamic CBF after glucose vs. fructose ingestion. "Glucose but not fructose ingestion reduced the activation of the hypothalamus, insula, and striatum -- brain regions that regulate appetite, motivation, and reward processing; glucose ingestion also increased functional connections between the hypothalamic-striatal network and increased satiety."
"The disparate responses to fructose were associated with reduced systemic levels of the satiety-signaling hormone insulin and were not likely attributable to an inability of fructose to cross the blood-brain barrier into the hypothalamus or to a lack of hypothalamic expression of genes necessary for fructose metabolism."

Jonathan Q. Purnell, M.D., and Damien A. Fair, PA-C, Ph.D., of Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, write in an accompanying editorial that "these findings support the conceptual framework that when the human brain is exposed to fructose, neurobiological pathways involved in appetite regulation are modulated, thereby promoting increased food intake."
"? the implications of the study by Page et al as well as the mounting evidence from epidemiologic, metabolic feeding, and animal studies, are that the advances in food processing and economic forces leading to increased intake of added sugar and accompanying fructose in U.S. society are indeed extending the supersizing concept to the population's collective waistlines."

Facebook security glitch exposes users' New Year's Eve messages

Whew! Facebook saved countless users from?New Year's Eve humiliation ... after initially exposing their private messages.
Facebook's Midnight Delivery app allows users to schedule private messages to wish friends a happy new year exactly when the clock strikes twelve. This is fantastic for those who intend on having a glass of Champagne or five as 2013 approaches, as it will let them schedule a polite message along the lines of?"Happy New Year, my beloved friends!" instead of drunk texting everyone ?something like?"I'm sooooo wasted right nowljskf and happy NEW YeAr! 2013 FTW! YOLO!" when the ball in Times Square drops.
Now great as Facebook's little app sounds, there was?just one problem: A security glitch temporarily exposed users' scheduled?messages to the general public.
The Next Web's?Robin Wauters reports that?when a user scheduled a Midnight Deliveries?message, he or she was presented with a confirmation page. Unfortunately, that confirmation page could be viewed by anyone who happens to guess its URL. "You couldn?t see who sent the messages," Wauters explains, "but you could see all the intended recipients, and the message itself, if you tweaked the URL the right way."
Those toying around with URLs could also see images which were attached to those scheduled massages. And to add insult to injury, they could also delete the correspondences.
"We are working on a fix for this issue now," a Facebook spokesperson told NBC News via email. "[A]nd in the interim we have disabled this app on the Facebook Stories site to ensure that no messages can be accessed."
Perhaps the more prudent approach, for the time being, is to just plain type out a "Happy New Year!!!!1!!!" text message and send it to everyone in your contacts at midnight.

CAR president urges rebels to let him finish his term
BANGUI (Reuters) - Central African Republic President Francois Bozize on Tuesday urged rebels threatening to enter the capital to lay down their arms and let him complete the last three years of his term.
Fighters encamped within 75 km (45 miles) of the capital Bangui accuse Bozize of reneging on a 2007 deal to give money and jobs to former rebels, and their leaders are now split over whether to accept an offer of new talks.
The rebellion poses the biggest threat yet to Bozize's near 10-year rule over the former French colony - one of the world's poorest nations despite its rich deposits of uranium, gold and diamonds.
"I repeat that I will not be a candidate in the 2016 election, so let me finish my mandate, I only have three years left," Bozize said in a New Year's Day address broadcast on state radio in the country's Sango language.
Bozize criticized his own army for a string of defeats during the Seleka rebels' three-week advance on the city, and thanked troops from neighboring Chad for reinforcing.
"The army has not played its role. Without the Chadian army we would no longer be here ... I ask forgiveness from all the people in areas occupied by the rebels," he said.
The criticism was a potentially risky move in a country whose history has been marked by a series of coups and mutinies.
The European Union called on the government and rebels to reach a deal and condemned reports of attacks on Bangui residents over the past few days.
"I call immediately on authorities to take all necessary measures to end, without delay, all exactions against populations in Bangui neighborhoods that undermine chances of a peaceful dialogue," said EU High Representative Catherine Ashton in a statement on Tuesday.
She did not give any further details, but a rebel spokesman said there had been reports of security forces and pro-government youth militia targeting opposition supporters. Bozize's government has not commented on those reports.
Bozize came to power in a 2003 rebellion and has depended on military support from France, Chad and other countries to ward off a succession of rebel assaults.
France has said it will not defend Bozize's government this time, and has urged Bozize, the rebels and the country's opposition to talk.
Hopes of a deal appeared to take a hit on Monday when rebel spokesman Eric Massi said the group had "nothing to negotiate".
But another rebel official said on Monday Seleka leaders were divided over whether to accept peace talks, with some factions ready to lay down their weapons.
Regional leaders have agreed to send 360 extra troops to shore up CAR's army this week - from Congo, Gabon and Cameroon - adding to a more than 500-strong regional force made up mostly of Chadian troops.
Chad President Idriss Deby, who heads the Economic Community of Central African States, warned rebels on Monday not to advance beyond Damara, a government-held town 75 km north of Bangui and the last buffer before the capital.
The rebels meanwhile have called on CAR's army and regional forces backing them to switch sides and turn on Bozize.
The rebels' rapid onslaught highlights instability in a country at the heart of one of Africa's most turbulent and underdeveloped regions.
Central African Republic is one of a number of countries where U.S. Special Forces are helping local soldiers track down the Lord's Resistance Army, a rebel group which has killed thousands of civilians across four nations.
About 1,200 French citizens live in CAR, and France has a 600-strong force in the country which it says it is using only to protect its nationals.

Asian nations giving enthusiastic welcome to 2013
LONDON (AP) ? Sydney's skyline erupted in fireworks as Australia ushered in 2013 on Tuesday, while extravagant displays soon followed in Hong Kong and Beijing, and even the once-isolated country of Myanmar joined the party for the first time in decades.
Asia greeted the new year with an atmosphere of renewed optimism despite the "fiscal cliff" impasse of spending cuts and tax increases threatening to reverberate globally from the United States and the tattered economies of Europe, where the party was expected to be more subdued.
Celebrations were planned around the world, culminating with the traditional crystal ball drop in New York City's Times Square, where 1 million people were expected to cram into the surrounding streets.
The balmy summer night in Sydney was split by 7 tons of fireworks fired from rooftops and barges, many cascading from the city's Harbor Bridge, in a $6.9 million pyrotechnic extravaganza billed by organizers as the world's largest.
In Myanmar, after nearly five decades under military regimes that discouraged or banned big public gatherings, about 90,000 people experienced the country's first New Year's Eve countdown in a field in the largest city of Yangon.
"We feel like we are in a different world," said Yu Thawda, a university student who came with three of her friends.
Tens of thousands of people lined Hong Kong's Victoria Harbor to view a $1.6 million fireworks display, said to be the biggest ever in the southern Chinese city.
In North Korea, cannons boomed at midnight in Pyongyang as people crowded the streets of the capital to watch a fireworks show over the Taedong River. After being in mourning a year ago regarding leader Kim Jong Il's death, North Koreans celebrated the end of a big year that included the rise of new leader Kim Jong Un and the recent launch of a satellite into space.
Hotels, clubs and other sites in New Delhi, the Indian capital, canceled festivities after the death Saturday of a young rape victim touched off days of mourning and reflection about women's safety. People were asked to light candles to express their solidarity with the victim.
In Indonesia, Jakarta's street party centered on a 7-kilometer (4-mile) thoroughfare closed to traffic from nightfall until after midnight. Workers erected 16 large stages along the normally clogged, eight-lane highway through the heart of the city. Indonesia's booming economy is a rare bright spot amid global gloom and is bringing prosperity ? or the hope of it ? to its people.
In the Philippines, where many are recovering from devastation from a recent typhoon, health officials have hit upon a successful way to stop revelers from setting off huge illegal firecrackers that maim and injure hundreds of Filipinos each year.
A health official, Eric Tayag, donned the splashy outfit of South Korean star PSY and danced to his YouTube hit "Gangnam Style" video while preaching against the use of illegal firecrackers on TV, in schools and in public arenas.
"The campaign has become viral," Tayag said.
In austerity-hit Europe, the mood was more restrained ? if hopeful. The year 2013 is projected to be a sixth straight one of recession amid Greece's worst economic crisis since World War II.
Still, in his televised New Year's Eve message, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras promised Greeks that the worst of the crisis is past, and declared 2013 a "year of hope" that will see the beginning of the country's rebirth.
Celebrating New Year's Eve with a vespers service in St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Benedict XVI said that despite all the injustice in the world, goodness prevails. In his homily, Benedict said taking time to meditate in prolonged reflection and prayer can help "find healing from the inevitable wounds of daily life."
German Chancellor Angela Merkel's New Year's message warned her country to prepare for difficult economic times ahead. Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, decided to cancel celebrations in light of the economic crisis. Nicosia said 16,000 euros ($21,000) saved from the canceled event will be given to some 320 needy schoolchildren.
In Spain, where a recession has left unemployment at a staggering 25 percent, people are hoping for a better new year.
"It's been tough, but some celebrations are too deeply-ingrained to let go," said Olga Camino, 25, who said she would be celebrating in the streets of Madrid in fancy dress with a large group of friends. She said they would all eat 12 grapes as the clock in Madrid's central Puerta del Sol struck midnight, a tradition observed throughout Spain.
Scotland's Edinburgh, which traditionally hosts one of the biggest New Year's Eve parties in Europe, also planned good cheer. Organizers said about 75,000 people are expected for the Scottish capital's Hogmanay ? or year-end ? celebrations.
Hong Kong feng shui master Raymond Lo predicted 2013 would be less turbulent than 2012 because the Chinese New Year in February will usher in the year of the snake, bringing an end to the year of the dragon, which was associated with water. Water is one of the five elements in feng shui theory, the Chinese practice of arranging objects and choosing dates to improve luck.
"Water is fear. So that's why we have had so much turbulence especially in the winter months," such as doomsday prophecies, school shootings and concerns about the fiscal cliff, said Lo.
"But the good news is that the coming year of the snake is the first time that fire has come back since 2007. Fire actually is the opposite to water, fire is happiness. So therefore the year of the snake is a much more optimistic year. So you can see signs of economic recovery now," he added.

Lockport will swim against the best Saturday at the Evanston Invitational, which will include defending state champion New Trier and state runner-up Naperville North.
?It?s a mini state meet,?? Lockport coach Grant Ferkaluk said. ?You?re seeing the best competition other than some of the teams that are from down south. It?s a big meet.??
Despite the tough competition, the top swimmers usually don?t avoid one another while they?re trying to do better than the next guy.
?With the guys teams, it seems like there?s a couple of stars at each program and all of them get along real well,?? Ferkaluk said. ?They enjoy competing against each other.??
?Swimming has always been in my life, but now it?s the primary sport I do,?? said Lockport?s Jake Knowles, a state qualifier last season in the 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard freestyle.
Speaking of elite competition, Lockport also will be in the New Trier Diving Invitational on Saturday.
Circle the calendar: The Lockport Invitational, which includes Stagg and Lincoln-Way Central, is Jan. 18 and 19.

Lockport has had a strong season thus far, winning titles at its own invitational and the Rock Island Invitational while finishing second in strong fields at the Palatine Invitational and Plainfield North Strikefest.
But although they?ve established themselves as one of the state?s top teams, the Porters know it won?t be easy to get to state out of a top-heavy Rich East Sectional.
Only two teams will advance out of the sectional that includes a Minooka squad that won the titles at Palatine and Plainfield North and finished second at Lockport.
Also in the sectional: defending state champion Andrew.
?We know it?s going to be a really tough sectional and we?re trying to get ready for it,? Lockport?s Bri Zabierek said. ?We?ve been kind of going back and forth with Minooka all year.?
Lincoln-Way West, with defending individual state champion Morgan Flaherty, is also in the sectional.
Plainfield East, Romeoville and the host Tigers will compete in the Plainfield North Sectional, where they will have to try to get past strong squads from Oswego and Oswego East.

Ten teams from the Joliet area qualified for the Illinois High School Association state meet last season and hope to return to Bloomington in February.
Those 10 squads and a host of other area teams will be heading to two sectionals ? Riverside-Brookfield and Mahomet-Seymour ? in late January.
In the large-school division, Lockport finished second to Sandburg for the state title and will head to Riverside-Brookfield along with Joliet West, which was seventh in the state.
Providence, which finished fourth in the state among large schools, will head to Mahomet-Seymour along with Lincoln-Way East (6th) and Plainfield Central (9th).
Lemont finished third in the medium-school division and will be heading to Riverside-Brookfield, along with Lincoln-Way West, which took 16th in the state last season.
In the small-school division, Wilmington (13th in the state last season) and Dwight (19th) will head to Riverside-Brookfield.
In the coed division, Joliet Central, which finished 23rd in the state, will head to Riverside-Brookfield.
Area squads have won five state titles since the tournament started in 2006. Lockport won in 2007 and 2008, while Lemont won three straight from 2009-11.

Edwardsville senior Blake Blair was considered the top-ranked wrestler at 195 pounds and eyeing an undefeated campaign at the start of the season. The undefeated goal came to an abrupt end after he met Plainfield Central?s Jordan Ellingwood in the finals of the esteemed Dvorak Invitational.
Ellingwood won in convincing fashion, avenging a quarterfinal defeat to Blair from a season ago to take home the title with a 13-5 decision.
Lockport junior Brian Rossi hopes he and teammate Austin Strzelczyk can springboard their Lake Park Invitational co-Outstanding Wrestler nods to bigger and better things.
?Last year our teammate Shaun?Qae (McMurtry) won the award,? Rossi said. ?He ended up winning state. I?m hoping I can follow a similar path. Winning the award gives me confidence and shows what I can do.?
In other tournament action over the holiday, Lincoln-Way East?s Kyle Langenderfer, an Illinois recruit, kept his undefeated record intact with a 152-pound title at the 27-team Berman Classic. His Lincoln-Way East teammate Nick Allegretti had a strong showing, but the heavyweight lost in the finals to top-ranked Brian Allen of Hinsdale Central.
