HBT: Carpenter takes 'good step' with simulated game

Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter took a big step in the right direction Sunday, throwing two simulated innings to a group of teammates in camp.

Carpenter was diagnosed earlier this month with a bulging cervical disc in his neck and has not yet appeared in a Grapefruit League game. But he?s beginning to make progress and might not have to miss a turn in the regular-season starting rotation if he?s able to avoid setbacks from here on out.

?It was a good step,? Carpenter told reporters after Sunday?s workout, per Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. ?I was excited to get back out there and throw a little bit. Now we move on to the next step. Hopefully, I wake up good enough tomorrow and go out and do that again sometime soon.?

Carpenter will need at least three exhibition outings to get properly geared up for April.

The 36-year-old right-hander registered a 3.45 ERA and 191/55 K/BB ratio across a league-leading 237 1/3 innings last year for the Cardinals before going 4-0 with a 3.25 ERA in six postseason starts.

NASA postpones launch of X-ray telescope

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? NASA has postponed the launch of a new X-ray telescope to allow more time to check an issue with the rocket that will boost it into orbit.

The space agency said Friday the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array will not launch this month as planned. A new launch date has not been set, but NASA expects it to occur sometime in the next two months.

The telescope will be launched aboard a Pegasus XL rocket from the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Mission managers decided to delay the launch to doublecheck the flight software on the rocket.

The telescope will peer at the sun, black holes and other hot and energetic objects.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Richard Howell has been a solid, if often overlooked, part of North Carolina State's resurgence this season.

On Friday, he decided to step into the spotlight.

Howell doubled his average, scoring 22 points, and 11th-seeded North Carolina State used its muscle inside and a sticky defense to upset San Diego State 79-65 in a second-round East Regional game.

"None of us had ever played in a game like this," Howell said. "This gave us a big confidence boost."

The 6-foot-8, 250-pound Howell got the Wolfpack (23-12) off on the right foot with 15 first-half points, carrying them into a showdown with No. 3 seed Georgetown on Sunday at Nationwide Arena.

"In today's game, we felt we could have success around the basket," first-year coach Mark Gottfried said. "We made the decision to go toward Richard, and he lit up like a Christmas tree."

It was easy to see that the Wolfpack had a size advantage on the surprising Aztecs (26-8), who were back in the tournament despite losing four starters from last year's squad that lost to eventual champion Connecticut.in the regional semifinals.

But what the Wolfpack ? and Howell in particular ? did in the paint was almost scary to watch.

"It's one thing to be big," San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said. "It's another thing to be big and good. And they were big and good. Obviously, Richard Howell was great for them and got them out of the gate. He was fantastic."

Lorenzo Brown added 17 points, C.J. Leslie 15 and Scott Wood 10 for the Wolfpack, who are now 12-5 in their first NCAA games. North Carolina State has won at least a game in seven of its last eight trips.

It's been a remarkable turnaround for the Wolfpack under Gottfried. They've improved by eight wins over last season, which ended with the firing of coach Sidney Lowe, and they made it to the NCAA tournament despite losing four in a row in February.

Howell, averaging 10.7 points a game, hit 7 of 9 shots ? including some where he stepped outside to pour in jumpers.

"He does it all the time in practice," said Brown, who also chipped in with eight assists. "I'm just glad he was hitting good shots. He was just feeling it, I guess."

Jamaal Franklin had 23 points and Chase Tapley 19 for the Aztecs (26-8), regular-season champs of the Mountain West.

"I could have seen us going farther," Franklin said. "That's why I'm disappointed."

Up by four at the break thanks to Howell, the Wolfpack didn't let up. Wood's 3-pointer from the right corner pushed the lead to 43-36.

Howell scored his final points on a spin move that he turned into a three-point play with 10:08 left that gave the Wolfpack a 57-50 lead. On that same play, he drew a fourth foul on the Aztecs' best big man, Tim Shelton.

Still, with the Aztecs scoring on five consecutive possessions, they drew to 57-54.

Gottfried called a timeout to talk to his troops, and it apparently worked.

"We've been through a lot this year," Brown said. "We've played a lot of great teams, like Syracuse and North Carolina and teams like that. Coming down to the end, we made big shots."

They did once again.

Out of the timeout, CJ Williams hit a short jumper. After a San Diego State miss, Brown made a 14-footer with a hand in his face for a 61-54 lead.

After Garrett Green dunked for the Aztecs, the Wolfpack came right back with back-to-back baskets to get some breathing room. First, Leslie dribbled laterally to the lane and pulled up to hit a 12-foot jumper. The Aztecs missed, then DeShawn Painter had the first of his two huge plays. He hit a fade from the left baseline for a 65-56 lead. He later added a three-point play to push the lead to 68-58.

The Wolfpack, a popular choice to pull the upset, will have a hard time sneaking up on anyone else.

"I have believed if they did things the right way, if they played good defense and executed at the right times, they had a chance," Gottfried said.

Plus, they also had a secret weapon.

"I didn't want this to be our last game," Howell said.

Brad Spirrison: Draw Something Illustrates How Quickly New Apps Can Take Off

Although there are more than one million apps available to download for Apple, Google, and Microsoft-powered smartphones and tablets, only a very sweet few ever become household names.

Like Angry Birds and Instagram, Draw Something by OMGPOP will make the crossover from hot mobile app to pop cultural phenomenon. And whereas those first two iconic brands took a few months to become mainstream, Draw Something -- more or less an updated version of Pictionary played on mobile devices -- almost literally is an overnight sensation, with more than 20 million downloads in first five weeks

While it took several months for Angry Birds and Instagram to attract one million users, Draw Something generated more than one million downloads in its first 10 days. Of course, Draw Something had at least two primary advantages over the older titles at launch that helped its distribution.

From the onset, it was available on both iOS and Android devices (Windows and other platforms seem inevitable). Moreover, there are now more than 315 million iOS and nearly 250 Android devices available (with more than a million combined new activations each day). By contrast, when Angry Birds debuted in 2009, the iPad was just a rumor. It took another year for developer Rovio to make an official Android version. Instagram is expected to become available for Android any day now, and lacks an app designed specifically for iPads.

With day one availability on iPhones, iPads, Androids as well as the iPod Touch, download and usage statistics for Draw Something are unprecedented (if not mind blowing!). To date, more than one billion pictures have been drawn on the app, including an average of 3,000 pictures a second drawn on March 11. Through 99 cent downloads, as well as in-app purchases for things like additional colors, OMGPOP's CEO Dan Porter told Business Insider that the title is generating six-figures in revenue every day. Draw Something's more than 20 million users have already surpassed the 17 million users of check-in pioneer foursquare, which is over three-years old.

Here is how Draw Something's ascent compares to other breakthrough applications.

Instagram (iPhone/iPod Touch, iPad: Free)

It's telling that the title picked by Apple as the top iPhone app of 2011 actually came out in 2010. What took Draw Something only 10 days to accomplish -- clear a million downloads -- required a far-from-instant three months for Instagram to flesh out. Once it hit the one million threshold, it only took Instragram another six weeks to double to two million downloads. Today, the app has more than 27 million users. And that's just the start. In addition to expanding to Android and presumably, eventually to other platforms like Windows and BlackBerry, Instagram reportedly is about to raise $40 million to fund ongoing marketing and development.

Angry Birds (iPhone/iPod touch $0.99, iPad $4.99, Android: Free)

While Angry Birds is regularly downloaded more than one million times per day, it took a few months for the most popular app of all-time to catapult to the top of the charts and attract one million users. Today, in addition to Android, Angry Birds is available for iOS, Android, Microsoft, BlackBerry and Nokia mobile devices in addition to consoles, web browsers and other media. The game has been downloaded more than a half billion times, is a merchandising powerhouse and will eventually become a feature film.

Camera+ (iPhone/iPod Touch: $0.99)

Of the hundreds of meaningful camera apps available for iPhones, Camera+ is the best (although newly released and free Camera Awesome is giving it a run for the money.) Camera+ became the 10th best selling app of all time by picking up where Apple's pre-installed Camera app left off. Still, to date Camera+ has only generated seven million downloads. While a new update that brings new features and the ability to integrate the service with other apps via APIs will no doubt give Camera+ a bump, it won't be catching up to Draw Something anytime soon.

Early pioneers pale in comparison.

In the months just after the iTunes App Store debuted in July 2008, there were a number of apps that made their developers rich. Yet when you add up even the aggregate overall downloads for early sensations like puzzle game Trism, mobile coupon provider Yowza and line drawing game Flight Control, the number won't even come close to what Draw Something will achieve within its first two months.

Android-only top sellers

Although there are several Android apps that have generated more than one million downloads, the titles that are exclusive to Android (or at least launched on that platform first) are few and precious. Among the seven-digit Android studs are Beautiful Widgets, Little Photo and Adobe Flash, which makes web browsing fully operational.

Ahmadinejad grilled by hostile Iran parliament

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was summoned to parliament on Wednesday for an unprecedented grilling by lawmakers who accused him of economic mismanagement and making "illegal" appointments.

Less than two weeks after a drubbing in parliamentary elections, Ahmadinejad became the first president in the Islamic Republic's history to be called before the legislature which has the power to impeach him if unsatisfied with his answers.

Factions who express complete loyalty to Iran's most powerful figure, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, have been trying to summon the president for months over what they say are repeated challenges to the supreme leader's authority.

Emboldened by their success over Ahmadinejad supporters at parliamentary elections this month, they finally had the chance to interrogate him about the near-stagnant, high-inflation economy and concerns over his allegiance to Khamenei.

Asking the questions, lawmaker Ali Motahari asked why Ahmadinejad had stayed at home for several days last April after Khamenei overturned the president's decision to sack his intelligence minister - an absence seen by some as a protest against the supreme leader's decision.

Belying his weakened standing, Ahmadinejad responded in a confident and, at times, flippant tone that did little to calm the excitement of the hearing, broadcast live on state radio.

He denied challenging the supreme leader, saying: "This is one of those things - Ahmadinejad staying home and resting. Some of my friends have repeatedly told me to rest. In this government, work has never been stopped for even a day."

BLAME

He played down the historic significance of the summons, saying it was parliament's right and not out of the ordinary.

"I was ready to answer questions before the election," he said. "But I thought it might have an impact on election results and then I would be blamed for it. I am the easiest to blame."

After an hour-long grilling that included questions on the botched financing of the Tehran metro and the veracity of government figures showing the creation of 1.6 million jobs in 2009 and 2010, many parliamentarians remained unimpressed.

"Ahmadinejad's answers to lawmakers' questions were illogical, illegal and an attempt to avoid answering them. With an insulting tone, Ahmadinejad made fun of lawmakers' questions and insulted parliament," Mohammad Taqi Rahbar was quoted as saying by parliament's news agency.

Having made several ministerial appointments that were unpopular with parliament - including briefly taking charge of the oil ministry, in charge of Iran's biggest economic sector - Ahmadinejad was questioned about how he picked people for key posts.

Outgoing reformist lawmaker Mostafa Kavakebian said: "The president did not give any logical answers and took everything as a joke."

"Is this a place to joke?" another parliamentarian, Mohammad Reza Khabbaz asked the assembly.

Iran's English-language television channel, Press TV, reported that some deputies had been riled by Ahmadinejad's mocking language and, after the session, made threats to impeach him after the Iranian new year holiday later this month.

But analysts said that was unlikely.

SERIOUS CHALLENGE

Ali Ansari of St Andrews University in Scotland characterized the hearing as a "not serious bit of bloodletting".

"Khamenei is clearly in charge and regards Ahmadinejad as too useful and divisive a figure to get rid of. Heaven forbid that a competent and well liked president take office who might pose a serious challenge to Khamenei," he added.

Tehran-based Professor Sadeq Zibakalam said Ahmadinejad's tone showed he was not a spent force.

"Some conservatives want to get rid of him before his term is over," he said. "Ahmadinejad showed today that it won't be easy to do. By being firm and not taking conservatives seriously, he's become stronger."

Mohammad Marandi of the University of Tehran said Ahmadinejad's failure to adequately answer questions about his differences with the supreme leader showed "a weak spot" but that he remained popular among ordinary Iranians.

"I don't think he'll be impeached," Marandi said. "This parliament doesn't have the motive at this stage. They are critics and want to keep him in check."

Analysts are now eyeing the make-up of the new parliament to assess the extent of the damage inflicted on the pro-Ahmadinejad faction during the parliamentary elections.

Zibakalam said it was still unclear whether the more than 70 newly-elected independent members would stand with or against Ahmadinejad during his remaining time in office which expires mid-2013.

Initially lauded by conservatives for his radical views on Israel and the West, attacks on Ahmadinejad by rival hardliners in parliament increased after last year's spat over the intelligence minister with his critics saying any challenge to Khamenei threatens the foundations of the Islamic Republic.

Saudi Arabia closes embassy in Syria

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia says it has closed its embassy in Damascus and pulled out its diplomats and staff as Syrian President Bashar Assad steps up attacks against the opposition.

The kingdom has become one of the leading Arab supporters of the Syrian rebels and has appealed for international efforts to study ways to provide aid and weapons to anti-Assad forces. The embassy closure was announced late Wednesday on the official Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi Arabia is a main regional rival of Iran, which is a close ally of Assad.

Last month, the Gulf Cooperation Council proposed that all Arab League nations withdraw their ambassadors from Damascus. The GCC includes Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian forces fired mortars and heavy machine-guns Wednesday in an attack on the southern city where the anti-government uprising began, propelled by recent military victories over rebels as the opposition fell into disarray.

At least two prominent Syrian dissidents said they have quit the main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, calling it an "autocratic" organization.

The opposition has been hobbled by disorganization and infighting since the popular revolt against President Bashar Assad began a year ago. Its international backers have repeatedly appealed for the movement to pull together and work as one unit.

Even before the high-level resignations, the opposition was already reeling from significant losses over the past few weeks when rebel fighters were largely driven out of two key strongholds ? the city of Idlib near the northern border with Turkey and the Baba Amr district in the central city of Homs.

After retaking Idlib earlier this week, government forces launched new attacks Wednesday on Daraa, the birthplace of the uprising.

A Jordan-based spokesman for the rebel Free Syrian Army, Muneef al-Zaeem, said there were tanks in the area and reports of dead and wounded, but that numbers could not be confirmed.

"We are not able to leave our houses. People are panicking because of the shooting," Daraa resident Abu Ahmed told The Associated Press by phone. "We are fearful because the shells can explode and kill everybody present in our homes."

Citing its network of sources on the ground, the Britain-based Observatory for Human Rights said 13 civilians were killed when the army stormed into Daraa, and that seven rebels were killed in clashes. The figures could not be independently verify.

The series of government assaults on opposition strongholds has only intensified international pressure on Assad. The U.S. had said it was considering military options to aid the Syrian rebels. But President Barack Obama said Wednesday that military intervention in the conflict would be premature, could lead to civil war and more deaths.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy likened Assad to a "murderer."

However Russia, which has remained a steadfast ally to Assad, said it would continue arming his regime ? reflecting the ongoing divisions in the international community over how to bring the violence in Syria to an end.

Although most countries are unwilling to get involved in the conflict, for fear of a protracted battle and a possible civil war, there have been widespread calls for the opposition to unite and speak with one voice against Assad.

Indeed, Assad's greatest advantage has been the weakness and lack of unity among the disparate forces opposing him. The groups have various ideologies and motivations, from secular forces to religious conservatives to outright radicals.

On Wednesday, the opposition's disarray was on display.

Kamal al-Labwani, one of the dissidents who announced his resignation from the Syrian National Council, said the 270-member organization was run autocratically. He even compared it to Assad's ruling Baath party.

He blasted council chief Burhan Ghalioun and others in the SNC.

"They are trying to build an autocratic rule inside the council," said al-Labwani, who worked for years against the Assad family regime before being jailed in 2005. He joined the council soon after being released in November.

"There is no group work. Everyone is working by himself and the whole council has not met once," confirming outside observations about the lack of unity in the movement.

He said that another council member, Catherine al-Talli, also quit and said he expected many more to follow suit soon.

Neither Ghalioun or al-Talli could be reached for comment. Council spokeswoman Bassma Kodmani did not respond to an email requesting comment.

Another dissident, 80 year-old lawyer Haitham al-Maleh, also said he quit over lack of cooperation in the council.

"There is no transparency and there is no respect for other opinions," he said. "They aren't given the work the attention that it needs to fulfill the ambitions of the Syrian people."

Both men said they would remain involved in the quest to topple Assad. Al-Labwani called for an international conference to be held in Turkey to make the council more democratic while al-Maleh said he was working to build support for armed rebels of the Free Syrian Army.

The U.S. and many European and Arab countries have said Assad must go but remain opposed to military intervention. Joint U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan ended his first visit to Syria Sunday without obtaining a cease-fire to make way for political dialogue.

Also Wednesday, Amnesty International said Syrian security forces routinely torture people detained during the uprising. The London-based group said detainees are beaten with sticks, cords and rifle butts. Others are sexually assaulted or killed.

The torture appears to be part of a strategy to punish and intimidate dissidents, the group said in its report.

"Torture and other ill-treatment in Syria form part of a widespread and systematic attack against the civilian population, carried out in an organized manner and as part of state policy and therefore amount to crimes against humanity," according to the report.

Amnesty's report was based on interviews in mid-February with dozens of Syrians who had fled to neighboring Jordan. Twenty-five said they had been tortured or ill-treated.

The group said it has documented 276 cases of death in detention since the uprising's start. But given the large number of people who have been detained, it says the number of those killed is likely much higher.

The report also accuses armed opposition groups of kidnapping and killing people believed to be associated with the regime. Syrian officials were not immediately available for comment.
