Is it safe to have a pet bird now? - Pets Care

I?m thinking about having a parrot, a sun conure. About the "Bird Flu" issue. Is it safe to have a bird in the house now ???

I am shock at the paranoia in some of the answers posted. They sound like they come from children. We don?t have bird flu in the US and for the most part it has died down in the rest of the world. There have been some mild strains of bird flu that have been found on poultry farms in the US, but not the major killer of birds that we heard about several years ago. Bird flu affected mostly water fowl and poultry, like chickens and turkeys. If this were a disease that began infecting humans, then the ones that would transmit the disease to humans would be other humans.

If your going to buy a bird make the purchase from a reliable and clean facility. Do your research! There are other disease that birds can have and they may sicken the bird or lead to the bird?s death and then you will be out the money you spent and you will not have a bird either.

If your still worried then check out the USDA sites about bird flu.

I totally agree with the last post about people being too paranoid I have 20 parrots, and I am still living.And so are they very well.

I just like to add to the other persons, post that it would be nice to find a bird that needed re homing, as lots of birds, parrots, are homeless, because there owner has past away, birds tend to out live there owner.Sun conures, under proper health can live to be in there 30?s.average is around 20 years,Also, sun conures can be loud, so make sure you are not going to bother anyone by having this bird, they are clowns however, really pretty and really cute, but like all animals they need routine vet checks, and well balanced diet.And nice size living space, with time out with family.

Pet birds don?t give you bird flu! I just bought a parakeet and im not sick. So, yes you?ll be fine just wash ur hands after handling him.
