Flood Insurance Program Extended for Five Years - Matawan ...

President Obama signed into law on June 30?the Flood Insurance Reform and Modernization Act of 2012. Many of us in the insurance industry had been lobbying Washington DC to give us the much-needed reforms and permanency for our flood insurance markets.

Since 2008, the US Congress has let the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) expire 17 times and some of those expirations have impaired a wide variety of real estate transactions. With the passage of this new reform law the NFIP will remain in place for five years without any interruption.

There will be several changes to the flood insurance program; mostly provisions that will make the flood insurance program self-sustaining without the need for an infusion of money to keep the program afloat. Certain properties that are too close to tidal waters will see a phase-out of subsidies. The flood insurance program in the past had maximum annual increases of 10% these will now be increased to 20%.

Other noteworthy provisions of the new law:

  • Requires the NFIP Administrator to develop a plan for repaying the debt incurred from Hurricane Katrina
  • Mandates that rates for secondary homes, properties with repetitive flood claims and commercial properties will go up 20% over the next five years.
  • Policyholders will be allowed to pay in installments instead of one lump sum.

Many of the details of the law will be subject to regulatory interpretation and implementation over the next 2 to 3 years in a serious effort to make the federal program self-sustaining.

What we as consumers can look forward to is a federal program that will have insurance rates much higher than what we have seen in the past and a larger emphasis on encouraging greater private sector participation in providing flood insurance coverage.

Caught Blue-Handed: Someone is Buying Mitt Romney Twitter Popularity

edited-countIt looks like someone made the colossally silly decision to buy Mitt Romney Twitter followers. In just a few days earlier this month, Romney saw of a spike of 150,000 Twitter followers, and most of these likely fake accounts, had less than 2 followers themselves, according to some crack reporting by The Atlantic. It is unknown whether the purchase was made by someone at Camp Romney, a clueless PR flack, or a conspirator trying to make him look bad. Regardless, fibbing politicians are a serious affront to democracy, and someone owes the American people an explanation.

Iran's Khamenei: reliance on oil sales a "trap"

DUBAI | Mon Jul 30, 2012 3:44am EDT

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran should wean itself off sales of its vast oil resources to power its economy, the country's clerical supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, as its crude exports become increasingly hampered by Western sanctions.

Revenues from crude oil sales supply about half of Iran's national budget and make up about 80 percent of its foreign exports, but the Islamic Republic is struggling to find buyers for its crude, with top Asian consumers cutting purchases as Western sanctions choke off business.

Separately, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad acknowledged the "difficult conditions" Iran faced as a result of international sanctions levied against Tehran's disputed nuclear program, and urged the government to save money to deal with the problem.

"Crude (oil) sales are a trap which we inherited from the years before the (1979 Islamic) Revolution," Khamenei said to a gathering of researchers and scientists on Sunday evening, in comments published on his official website.

"Unfortunately, the country has been stuck and efforts must be made so that the people of Iran are freed from that trap."

Khamenei said it was important the country reach a point where it could easily shut down its oil wells and stop selling crude products, according to the published statement.

"It is possible to reach these conditions by relying on science and the knowledge base," Khamenei said, without elaborating further.

Ahmadinejad used windfall earnings from record oil prices in 2008 to go on an import spending spree, which critics said hurt domestic industries and caused a spike in inflation.

Iran's exports have declined steadily this year from the 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) average in 2011, as its oil buyers cut imports to comply with U.S. and European Union sanctions aimed at forcing Tehran to give up its nuclear program.

Since the sanctions were tightened early this year, Iran's currency has flagged and prices for basic goods have soared.

In a meeting with legislators on Sunday evening, Ahmadinejad said the country's leaders must work "hand in hand" to exit the current crisis, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), saying the legislative and executive branches should look for areas to save costs.

"Everyone should accompany the government by cutting costs and transforming stagnant property into productive assets," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying.

Ahmadinejad, now in his final year as president, has faced intense criticism of his economic policies from conservative rivals in the parliament.

"The enemy is putting great pressures on the country and has fostered difficult conditions," Ahmadinejad said, according to IRNA. "But this is where we must once and for all make the enemy disappointed and regretful of its approach and actions."

Khamenei and other Iranian officials have acknowledged the sanctions' bite, but have urged the adoption of a "resistance economy" in response to the crisis, emphasizing greater reliance on domestic producers rather than imports, though they have yet to present a detailed plan on how to do so.

READY, SET, COOK! TO BENEFIT GIFTS OF LOVE | Farmington ...

High class kitchen remodeling. | OKFAMILIES

Are you a homeowner who is interested in remodeling your kitchen? Whether you are just looking to change the appearance of your home or increase the value of it, there may be a good chance that you are. If so, do you plan on doing your own remodeling? Although it can be somewhat difficult, a large number of homeowners make the decision to do their own kitchen remodeling, even if they do not have any home improvement experience. Although it is possible to remodel your own kitchen, without any prior home improvement experience, you may, at least, want get some training. You can do this with a kitchen remodeling class, course, or training seminar.

When it comes to kitchen remodeling courses, one of the most commonly asked questions is why. The answer is the training that you will receive. Depending on the type of kitchen remodeling course, class, or seminar that you attend, you will likely get both classroom experience and hands on experience. Hands on experience means that you may not only get to watch a kitchen remodeling project being done, such as a new cabinet installation, but you may also get to try your hand at it. The overall quality of your kitchen remodeling project may have an impact on your home?s value; that is why it is a good idea to get all of the training and experience that you can.

If you are looking for a kitchen remodeling course, you may want to try the internet or your local newspaper. In the United States, there are a number of career training centers that host classes and training seminars. Although the goal of these courses is to prepare students for a career in kitchen remodeling, you may still be able to learn about kitchen remodeling, particularly what you should or shouldn?t do. In fact, you may also find that you like remodeling things so much that you may even want to change your career path. The only problem with taking a kitchen remodeling class that has a focus on career training is the cost. The cost of these courses will all vary, but they will, almost always, cost money. The cost typically averages about fifty or hundred dollars per person.

If you are looking for a low-cost way to attend a kitchen remodeling seminar, you may want to contact one of your local home improvement stores. Many of the home improvement stores that operate on a national level offer training classes for their customers. Many times, these classes only last a few hours, but the information that you can walk away with may be invaluable. It is also important to note that the kitchen remodeling courses offered by most home improvement stores are more affordable; in fact, many are even free to attend. The only problem that you may find with these classes is that they tend to focus on only one project, such as new countertop installations. If you are looking to remodel your whole kitchen, you may need to attend more than one class.

As previously mentioned, a kitchen remodeling training seminar, class, or course, may help you understand what you should and shouldn?t do when remodeling your kitchen. For instance, you may learn that you shouldn?t take shortcuts when remodeling your kitchen. You may also learn tips on how to do something quickly, but effectively, such as installing your new kitchen cabinets. It is likely that safety will be touched on as well. A kitchen remodeling training course, class or seminar, may help you understand the importance of safety, as well as provide you with valuable tips on how to stay safe. Regardless of what you learn, you will likely walk away more informed.

Although it is advised that you take a kitchen remodeling training seminar, course, or class, especially if you do not have any previous home improvement experience, you may not want to. If that is the case, it is advised that you at least follow all of the directions or instructions that you are given, if you were given any at all.

Why Is Social Media Becoming Important for Customer Service ...

Why Is Social Media Becoming Important for Customer Service

Customer service is a critical element of any business. Even if you offer the best product on the market, if you fail to provide them with excellent customer service, you will find yourself facing dissatisfied customers.? On the other hand, however, when you offer high-quality customer service, people appreciate that and tend to stick with you.? Oftentimes, when people are presented with the best product, yet poor customer service or a little bit lower-quality product, but fantastic customer service, they will choose the latter.? That is because people want to feel valued and important when dealing with a company, knowing they will be served and treated as though they matter.

In the online world, customer service is just as important. Even if clients cannot meet face-to-face with a customer service representative, the way they are treated online and the type of assistance they receive can either make or break their loyalty to the company. If they are acknowledged even when they simply post a comment on the website or blog, they will feel appreciated and will continue to give you their business.

Social media networks have become indispensable when it comes to the success of online customer service. These social media platforms create a place for customers to say what they want to say about a product or company and offer a review of their experience.? The company can then respond by either expressing their gratitude for the positive review or addressing the concerns that the customer raised.

However, a critical factor in using social media for customer service is the response rate. Keep in mind that people expect a quick response from a customer service representative. They expect a response after a few hours and definitely within the day. If they do not get a response, the tendency is to complain online, which can immediately create a bad reputation for the company throughout that person?s networks.

You can further improve your online customer service by making yourself more easily accessible to your customers.? Having a Facebook account may no longer be enough because you may have clients that prefer using Twitter to posting a comment on Facebook. Making yourself available via a variety of social media avenues gives them more convenient access to you, which makes them feel valued and understood.

A social media agency helps online businesses implement strategic techniques to create a more successful customer service experience for their customers online. These social media gurus execute tactics that emphasize the importance of the customer and guarantee their loyalty to the company. Once you make a client feel important and well taken care of, they will always be loyal to you.? So, if you are interested in learning about ways you can increase the customer service you offer to your customers, it?s worth talking with a social media agency to learn how they can help you.

BroadBand Nation: IP Telephony (VoIP) Terms And Definitions

Here's a quick primer with the latest IP Telephony expressions, VoIP terms and definitions of this rapidly growing industry. For specific assistance with business VoIP applications go to Business VoIP Solution.

ACD: Average Call Duration.

AHT (Average Hold Time): The average length of time between the moment a caller finishes dialing and the moment the call is answered or terminated.

ANI (Automatic Number Identification): A telephone function which transmits the billing number of the incoming call (Caller ID, for example).

ANSI (American National Standards Institute): The American standardization body known for interface recommendations and standardization of programming languages. ANSI is a non-profit making, government-independent organization.

AS (Autonomous System): A group of networks under mutual administration that share the same routing methodology.

ASP (Application Service Provider): An independent, third party provider of software-based services delivered to customers across a wide area network (WAN).

ASR (Answer-Seizure Ratio) : The ratio of successfully connected calls to attempted calls (also called 'Call Completion Rate').

ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter): Used to connect a standard telephone to a high-speed modem to facilitate VoIP and/or fax calls over the Internet.

ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode): A technology for switched, connection-oriented transmission of voice, data and video. It makes high-speed dedicated connections possible between a theoretically unlimited number of network users and also to servers.

Asterisk: An open source that provides all the functionality of high-end business telephone systems. It is the world's most flexible and extensible telephone system, providing many features that are not yet available in even the most advanced proprietary systems. It is also the world's cheapest telephone system. The software is free and runs on inexpensive Linux servers.

Backbone: A high-speed network spanning the world from one major metropolitan area to another.

Bad Frame Interpolation: Interpolates lost/corrupted packets by using the previously received voice frames. It increases voice quality by making the voice transmission more robust.

Bandwidth: The maximum data carrying capacity of a transmission link. For networks, bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second (bps).

Billing Increment: A call duration measurement unit, usually expressed in seconds.

Broadband: A descriptive term for evolving digital technology that provides consumers a single switch facility offering integrated access to voice, high-speed data service, video demand services, and interactive delivery services.

CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act): A 1994 act that requires telecommunications services to provide wiretapping access. The act specifically excludes information services, so the question is whether VoIP is a telecommunications service, and thus covered by the act, or an information service, and thus exempted. VoIP providers are receiving pressure to comply with the act.

Call Deflection: Call Deflection allows a called endpoint to redirect the unanswered call to another endpoint.

Call Detail Record (CDR): Information regarding a single call collected from the switch and available as an automatically generated downloadable report for a requested time period. The report contains information on the number of calls, call duration, call origination and destination, and billed amount.

Circuit-Switched: Communication system that establishes a dedicated channel for each transmission. The copper-wire telephone system (POTS) uses circuit-switching, as do PBX systems. Dedicated channels mean strong reliability and low latency, but the downside is that only one type of communication can use the channel at any given time.

CLEC (Competitive Local Exchange Carrier): A telephone company that competes with the larger incumbent carriers (ILECs) through reselling the ILEC services and/or creating services that use the ILEC's infrastructure. The Regional Bells are ILECs; local phone companies are frequently CLECs.

Codec (Compression-Decompression): In VoIP it is a voice compression-decompression algorithm that defines the rate of speech compression, quality of decompressed speech and processing power requirements. The most popular codecs in VoIP are G.723.1 and G.729.

Compression: VoIP uses various compression ratios, the highest approximately 12:1. Compression varies according to available bandwidth.

Congestion: The situation in which the traffic present on the network exceeds available network bandwidth/capacity.

CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Detection): This is the access procedure to the Ethernet in which the participating stations physically monitor the traffic on the line. If no transmission is taking place at the time the particular station can transmit. If two stations attempt to transmit simultaneously this causes a collision that is detected by all participating stations. After a random time interval the stations that collided attempt to transmit again.

Dial-peer (Addressable Call Endpoint): A software structure that binds a dialed digit string to a voice port or IP address of the destination gateway. Several dial peers always exist on each router in the network, and at least two will be involved in making a call across the network, one on the originating end and one on the terminating end. In Voice over IP, there are two kinds of dial peers: POTS and VoIP. VoIP peers point to specific VoIP devices.

Dial-peer hunting: Process when the originating router tries to establish call on different dial peers if the originating router receives a user-busy invalid number or an unassigned-number disconnect cause code from a destination router.

DiffServ (Differentiated Services): A quality of service (QoS) protocol that prioritizes IP voice and data traffic to help preserve voice quality, even when network traffic is heavy.

DNIS (Dialed Number Identification Service): A telephone function which sends the dialed telephone number to the answering service.

DSP (Digital Signal Processors): All digital audio systems use DSP technology in order to differentiate between signal and noise. In telephone communication, too, much noise creates problems in maintaining connections, and in VoIP systems the DSP component provides features such as tone generation, echo cancellation, and buffering.

DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi Frequency): The type of audio signals generated when you press the buttons on a touch-tone telephone.

Dynamic Jitter Buffer: Collects voice packets, stores them, and shifts them to the voice processor in evenly spaced intervals to reduce any distortion in the sound.

E911 (Enhanced 911): Technology allowing 911 calls from cellular phones to be routed to the geographically correct emergency station (PSAP: Public Safety Answering Point). VoIP users currently have limited access to 911 services, and with some providers none, because VoIP is not geographically based.

FCC (Federal Communications Commission): The regulator of telephone and telecommunications services in the United States. It's not yet known the full extent to which the FCC will regulate VoIP communications. Part of the complication lies with determining the regulation of communications that begin or end on an FCC-regulated system, such as the standard telephone service.

Firewall: Security software or appliance that sits between the Internet and the individual PC or networked device. Firewalls can intercept traffic before it reaches network routers and switches, or between router/switch and PC, or both. Because the job of firewalls is to prevent access from specific packets over specific network ports, some must be specially configured to allow VoIP traffic to pass through.

FoIP (Fax over Internet Protocol): The fax counterpart to VoIP, available from some providers either free or at additional cost. FoIP is actually more reliable than VoIP because of its tolerance for poor latency.

H.323: The standard call protocol for voice and videoconferencing over LANs, WANs, and the Internet, allowing these activities on a real-time basis as opposed to a packet-switched network. Initially designed to allow multimedia to function over unreliable networks, it's the oldest and most established of the VoIP protocols. See also SIP and MGCP.

Latency: The time it takes for a packet to travel from its point of origin to its point of destination. In telephony, the lower the latency, the better the communication. Latency has always been an issue with telephone communication taking place over exceptionally long distances (the United States to Europe, for example). With VoIP, however, latency takes on a new form because of the splitting of the message into packets (see packet-switched) and network delay in general.

MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol): Another protocol competing with H.323 (see also SIP). MGCP handles the traffic between media gateways and their controllers. Especially useful in multimedia applications: the media gateway converts from various formats for the switched-circuit network, and the controller handles conversion for the packet-switched network. Designed to take the workload away from IP telephones themselves and thereby make IP phones less complex and expensive.

Packet-switched: Communication system that chops messages into small packets before sending them. All packets are addressed and coded so they can be recompiled at their destination. Each packet can follow its own path and therefore can work around problematic transmission segments. Packet switching is best when reaching a destination is the primary concern and latency is permissible, such as sending e-mail and loading Web pages.

PBX (Private Branch Exchange): A privately owned system for voice switching and other telephone related services. It routes calls from the public telephone system within an organization and allows direct internal calls.

PDD (Post Dial Delay): When a telecom switch is trying to establish the best possible route for the call.

POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service): Nothing more than a standard telephone line, the kind Ma Bell and then AT&T handled exclusively before the deregulation of the telephone industry. Upgrade your POTS to DSL, and you have broadband; add VoIP, and you have a system that uses POTS, the PSTN and the Internet in one seamless system.

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network): The network of wires, signals, and switches that lets one telephone connect to another anywhere in the world. Some VoIP services provide a gateway from the Internet to the PSTN and vice versa.

RTP (Real Time Protocol): Also known as Real Time Transport Protocol. Controls the transmission of packets of data that demands low latency (such as audio and video). Supports real-time transmission over IP networks and streaming as one means of delivery.

QoS (Quality of Service): Refers to the quality of the voice call over a VoIP network. A major issue in VoIP communications, because the high quality of telephone calls has always been taken for granted. Latency, packet loss, network jitter, and many other factors contribute to QOS measurements, and numerous solutions have been offered by vendors of routers and other network components.

SIP (Session Initiation Protocol): Communication protocol that operates similarly to H.323 but is less complex and more Internet- and Web-friendly. Fully modular and designed from the ground up for functioning over IP networks, it can be tailored more easily than H.323 for Internet applications. SIP and H.323 can and do coexist.

SoftPhone: A software app that gives you the ability to make and receive calls over the Internet using your PC and a headset or a microphone and speakers. A softphone's interface can look like a traditional phone dial pad or more like an IM client.

Universal Service: The availability of affordable telecommunications technology for all Americans, part of the 1966 Telecommunications Act, and regulated by the FCC. Current discussions revolve around the applicability of VoIP to universal services and whether or not VoIP providers should be taxed accordingly.

Virtual Phone Number: A feature of VoIP that allows you to attach additional phone numbers with different area codes to your basic VoIP service. This feature allows people to phone you without incurring long-distance charges from the same or adjacent nontoll area codes. All outgoing calls, however, are billed as if coming from your main phone number. Virtual phone numbers typically each cost a few extra dollars per month.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol): The technology behind Internet phones. VoIP works by digitizing voice signals and sending them as packets through the same networking channels as your data.

Voip Escrow was created to provide a safe and secure platform for buyers and sellers of "minutes" to conduct business. This specificly applies to a segment of the industry (primarily non-US) dealing in call origination and termination points for VoIP traffic servicing targeted customer populations (e.g. Midle East, Eastern Europe, SE Asia). The service acts as a middle-man who protects the buyer by assuring the buyer they receive minutes they have ordered, and protecting the seller by ensure the money is available to him/her for minutes they have provided.

Pentagon still grappling with rules of cyberwar

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon is still grappling with how to write the rules of cyberwarfare, such as when and how to fire back against a computer-based attack, senior military leaders told Congress Wednesday.

Four months ago the military's top cyberwarrior predicted the rules would be ironed out in a "month or two" and sent to other federal agencies for discussion. But the complex world of cyberspace, which has no real boundaries and operates at the speed of light, has proven to be a difficult battlefield for the military to map out.

House members said that working out the rules of cyberwar is critical so that the military will be able to respond quickly when U.S. networks are attacked or threatened. Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas, told military leaders that there likely won't be time for Congress to pass a declaration of war if or when a computer-based attack happens.

So, consultation with lawmakers beforehand would smooth things over, said Thornberry, chairman of the House Armed Services emerging threats subcommittee.

"The devil is in the details," acknowledged Vice Adm. Michael Rogers, commander of the Navy's Fleet Cyber Command. He said it has been an issue for some time, and that he expects there will be some developments "at some point in the near term."

During hearings in March, members of Congress pressed Army Gen. Keith Alexander, head of U.S. Cyber Command, for details on the military rules of engagement for offensive cyberoperations, particularly so that U.S. forces have the proper authority to act quickly when an attack is discovered or a network is breached. Alexander, who also heads the secretive National Security Agency, said at the time that U.S. officials were reaching some agreement on the rules.

The military has longstanding rules of engagement for conventional warfare that lay out the appropriate response to a particular act or attack by another country or faction. And last year President Barack Obama signed execute orders that detailed how far military commanders around the globe can go in using cyberattacks against enemies and laid out when the military must seek presidential approval for a specific cyberassault.

The current ground rules for cyberoperations were written in 2005, but are not adequate for the current technologies. The new rules, said Alexander in March, would allow the military to stop breaches as they were happening and would detail the conditions necessary to take those actions.

Senior officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps who are responsible for cyberoperations testified before the subcommittee. They said that the armed services are using bonuses and other enticements to recruit and retain cyberwarriors, while competing with private industry for candidates.

But lawmakers wondered about funding shortfalls that could stifle the increase in cyberpersonnel the Pentagon is bringing on.

"We are facing significant fiscal challenges in the coming years," said Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I. "Cyberrelated activities are faring reasonably well so far, but nothing is immune, and even noncyberspecific cuts could have an impact on your commands as personnel resources are reduced or research and development funding decreased."

Rogers said that attracting and keeping his cyberworkforce is a "significant challenge, given the rapidly evolving nature of cyberspace and the intense competition from industry for top talent."

And other said that dramatic budget cuts, which will become necessary early next year if Congress can't agree on funding, would be a problem.

Maj. Gen. Suzanne Vautrinot, commander of Air Forces Cyber, said the cuts would be devastating and cause the Air Force to lose ground.

As to the size of their cyberworkforce, the Air Force has about 17,000, the Army has about 11,000; the Navy has about 14,000; and the Marines have about 700. Cyber has been one defense area where spending has increased, even as budget cuts hit other places.

Vautrinot also noted that the Air Force has been working to make sure that key drone operations are protected against cyberattacks, focusing on the highest priority missions. Last year, a computer virus infected the Pentagon's drone program, but it did not get into flight controls.

London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games

The London 2012 Summer Olympics will captivate the world in a matter of days, but the official video game tie-in is already here, courtesy of Sega. The lengthily named London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games puts players in the position to experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in over 30 world-class competitions. London 2012 manages to capture the games' spirit with its collection of mini-games, but the lack of real-world athletes and a few ho-hum events keep it from bringing home the gold.

Olympic Tech

On Your Mark?
London 2012 features 36 nations competing for Olympic gold in such varied competitions as the 100 meter dash, archery, skeet shooting, table tennis, and weightlifting. When you select a nation to represent, London 2012 displays relevant background information such as the country's first year of Olympic participation, total number of medals won since, and the sports in which it excels. I selected team USA which excels at athletic, swimming, diving, and wrestling.

Unfortunately, London 2012 lacks real-world athlete names (like Usain Bolt), so players spoiled by FIFA Soccer 12 ($59.99, 4 stars) and Madden NFL 12's ?($39.99, 4 stars) painstaking player recreations won't feel like they are playing a true Olympic game. That said, you can edit characters' names and appearances, so if you're diligent and have the time, you can recreate your favorite athletes.

Get Set?
Each in-game day you can choose to participate in a handful of events. You can opt to play a tutorial before each event to get the flow of the mechanics, or dive straight in?the latter isn't recommended. London 2012 focuses on rhythm and precision, not button-mashing, so if you leap into the game with a button on rapid-fire, you won't medal. This is exemplified in the racing events where you tap a button to fill a momentum meter. Keep it in the green and your sprinter runs at a fast, steady pace; have the meter go red by pressing the button too rapidly and she or he will burnout. Swimming works in a similar time-based fashion but you use analog sticks instead of buttons. It's truly a refreshing change of pace.

That said, some of the simplified controls lack a certain pizzazz. The gymnastic events are quick-time events, which essentially sees you tapping buttons in time with their on-screen appearances. Some will appreciate the simplified controls, but I found them a bit too simple. London 2012 also supports the Kinect and PlayStation Move motion peripherals. I played the game using Kinect (it supports a dozen events), and found the controls hit or miss, depending on the event.

Sega includes multiple modes to keep gameplay fresh. Besides the single player, local multiplayer (up to 4 players), and online multiplayer modes (8 players) there's Event Play where you pick and play a group of sports in four-player competition, and Party Play that lets you play one-off events. You can also save these event "playlists" so you can load them up and continue playing at a later time.

The game has TV-style presentation, complete with instant replays and component announcers who pull you into the action. You'll enjoy watching London 2012's attractive character models that swim, run, and cycle in realistic fashion. That said, the characters have dead eyes and expressions that dip into the uncanny valley.

Go!
London 2012 is a solid title that manages to capture some of the competitive glory that is the Summer Olympics. It is, essentially, a collection of mini-games, so there isn't much connection between events even in career mode. The game excels in multiplayer modes?either online or local?as the computer competition ranges from pushover to tough-as-nails. If you're looking to live the Olympic thrill, London 2012 is a silver-medal game for the less athletically inclined.?

Lots of Old News and a Rare Mushroom Find! - - Portland Food and ...

PFM Chard

Portland Farmers Market ? Chard

There is a new chef at the Brasserie Montmartre. Chef Johnny Nudd will lead the kitchen beginning July 24th. From the press release -

?Talented yet humble, and with experience in San Francisco, New
York, and Europe, Chef Johnny is the kind of chef I like to
collaborate with,? says Chureau, former chef-owner of Fenouil,
who has more recently revived the Brasserie as a new French-
American Brassiere since May of last year and who has opened
and operated Allium, a neighborhood farm-to-table bistro in West
Linn since 2010.

?Chef Johnny is well-equipped to carry on the talent started by
Chef Michael and lead the crew in what we?re creating here at the Brasserie.?

The Brasserie?s new Executive Chef has big shoes to fill. But his pedigree and talent promises?some exciting, new dishes. Hailing from the mid-Atlantic, Chef Johnny began his career in?finance but fell in love with cooking after moving to San Francisco. There, he worked with?Mark Franz at the famed haute-cuisine restaurant, Farallon, and opened the renowned Postrio?Rosenthal Brothers? Town Hall Restaurant.

He pursued his culinary career in New York City at Eleven Madison Park under Chef Kerry?Heffernan and then Michelin-rated Swiss Chef ?Daniel Humm. When a unique opportunity arose?in Madrid, Spain, Chef Johnny joined Chef Karen Bell, formerly of Farallon, and opened and
operated Restaurante Memento in the Alonzo Martinez district of Madrid.

Lured by the famed food town of Portland after a short visit in 2007, Chef Johnny was named?Executive Chef of restaurant (five-0-three) in West Linn. In June of 2010 Chef Johnny moved to?Portland and has led the kitchens first at RingSide Steakhouse and then at RingSide Fish House?which opened in July of 2011.

Serratto is highlighted on the Wine Spectator Restaurant Award list.?Serratto is highlighted in green, being recognized in the guide as having a wine list of exceptional value.? The only other Portland restaurants listed in the green category are Andina and Portland Prime ? the rest are elsewhere in Oregon. Bluehour received an ?Award of Excellence for ?having one of the most outstanding restaurant wine lists in the world?.

Continuing the parade of ice cream shops, the new Ruby Jewel Scoop Shop opens at ?428 SW 12th?Ave. on July 28, 2012. ?The two-story space features Ruby Jewel?s small-batch artisan ice cream, and its new offerings include two flavors of soft-serve ice cream daily and an old-fashioned soda fountain with homemade syrups and signature ice cream sundaes. A new candy viewing area is available for guests to watch the making of homemade marshmallows, candied nuts and toffee brittle from the sidewalk or through an inside viewing window.

?Ruby Jewel ice cream was local from the beginning when owners Herlinger and Burnett sold their homemade ice cream sandwiches out of a cart at the Portland Farmers? Market. They partnered with Lochmead Dairy since 2005 in nearby Junction City for the hormone-free cream and milk and infuse their ice cream with flavors that include locally grown mint, honey, lavender and fruit. ?We even take our staff on berry-picking excursions to nearby Sauvie Island for our summer berry flavors,? says Herlinger. ?Our seasonal flavors take advantage of Oregon?s bounty ? from pumpkin and pear to blueberries and figs.?

The newest Barista Coffee has?officially?opened at?529 SW 3rd avenue. Owner Billy Wilson said much of the delays were caused by the age of the building, and a ?very old plumbing system, which had to be redone before the shop could be built?. ? From NPR?s The Salt, Fancy Names Can Fool Wine Geeks Into Paying More For?A Bottle

?Participants not only reported liking the taste of the wine better if it was associated?with a difficult to pronounce winery name. But they also reported about a $2 increase?in willingness to pay,? Mantonakis says. (Give or take six cents in U.S. dollars.) But here?s the fun part ? the more Mantonakis? test subjects knew about wine, the?more easily they got duped into thinking difficult wine names equaled pricier wines.?She says that?s because wine geeks will hunt for just about any subtle difference they?can find, like a unique sounding name. ?And if something is rare and unique then maybe it might be a higher value and it?maybe something that is more special,? she says. So that?s how you trick a wine geek.

As you probably know, chef Anthony Cafiero has left the popular Tabla restaurant to ?pursue other interests?. This is a huge loss for Tabla, and it will be interesting to see if they can keep up the quality. The big question however, is what Cafiero will do next. There has been lots of gossip floating around ? (I suggested he hire Kelley Swenson as a bartender). PDXEater pried a bit of information out of him.

Cafiero is currently in talks with backers to open a 30-seat ?modern tapas? concept called Raci?n, which aims to make modernist techniques more accessible as part of a playful, communal experience. Early designs revolve around two central bar spaces that provide the majority of the seating ? one bar features an open kitchen (with dishes passed over the counter to diners), the other, a cocktail bar featuring modernist drinks. ?We?re making spumas out of Campari, we?re making orange spheres that burst as you drink,? Cafiero says. ?We?re making hot-cold-hot-cold drinks that you eat with a spoon ? like Jell-O shots, in a certain way.?

Word on the street is that chef Philippe Boulot hasn?t had much to do with the Heathman Restaurant since he took over the MAC Club restaurant 4 years ago, but his name was still associated with the restaurant (for a?certain?fee, I?m sure) to give it some cachet. According to Michael Russell at the Oregonian, Boulot has now officially severed those ties. ? A large part of his decision may be the recent purchase of The Heathman by Texas-based Laundry?s, which holds?33 restaurant brands, including Landry?s Seafood House, Chart House, Rainforest Cafe, Saltgrass Steak House, The Oceanaire Seafood Room, Claim Jumper, Golden Nugget Hotels and Casinos. I?d run too ? haven?t seen such a long list of mediocre restaurants in a long time.

According to Eater LA, Stumptown Coffee Roasters is opening a roasting facility in Los Angeles. As Stumptown has expanded after their purchase by the investment firm TSG, the positive press has continued, with the NYTimes recently saying ?Stumptown is the leader, and the cutting edge of third wave coffee.? As this point the company is becoming so ubiquitous in the LA area, it?s even being served on food trucks. A local roasting facility makes sense to me.

A few more tidbits, these from OregonLive.com. Both the ice cream shop?Salt & Straw and French bakery Saint Honore will be opening on Division at 33rd place, giving each of the business three locations. This will put them in the same area as Ava Genes (going into the old Lauro spot), Pok Pok, Sunshine Tavern, Whiskey Tavern and Wafu. According to the O, the Salt & Straw ice cream cart should be open now!

This next story is probably not safe for work, but is so strange I couldn?t pass it by (besides, it was good enough for ABC News). A ?Sex Toy? was confused with an exotic mushroom in the Chinese Village of Liucunbu. Villagers drilling a well shaft found the?heretofore unknown species of? ?mushroom?, the called the local TV station, which sent over a reporter. ?They thought they had discovered a rare fungus?.

?It has an eye and a nose, but we don?t know what it is,? one of the villagers tells the Chinese reporter, according to an English translation from ABC.

But this was no miraculous mushroom. Several viewers pointed out the mysterious object was actually an artificial vagina ? a sex toy ? The Mirror notes.

?Ignorance is horrible. How can the reporter mistake a sex toy for fungus?? one viewer commented on his Weibo microblog, according to the Mirror.

The station responded by essentially throwing their reporters under the bus, saying they were ?young and unfamiliar with worldly affairs.?

To those of us who are still adolescent well into our late 50?s, the photo of someone measuring the, um, device, is?hilarious.?You can see the rest of the story along with the Chinese video here.

Lovejoy Bakers?is opening has opened a second location in SE Portland at 2523 SE 9th Ave, 97202. Owned by the couple behind the Pizzicato chain, Lovejoy East will function as a cafe and wholesale location. There is a nice umbrella shaded patio area for relaxing with your paper and a bit of food. I dropped by last week and had a pretty nice sandwich. They are open for breakfast and lunch until 2:00pm. You can check out their menu here.

In 2010, I posted a summary of the ?Top Ten Mistakes Made by Farmers Market Customers?. From my experience at the market last weekend, they could bare repeating.

Many of the suggestions are pretty obvious ? Don?t get there too late, bring your own bags (though many local market vendors provide them. Lots of people bring some sort of basket to carry things with, and you may find yourself buying more than you can comfortably carry. Remember, you?ll need to bring cash. Most markets don?t have any way to take credit cards, though you can frequently find a cash machine in the area if you hunt around.

Try to be adventurous with new produce, and ask the farmers questions ? I?ve learned about different varieties of produce that I would have never tried if the vendor hadn?t suggested them to me.?Ask them how they prepare the items you aren?t familiar with ? trust me, they know.

Veggies are usually cheaper than fruit. Don?t forget dairy products, such as eggs, fish, cheese and meat. All of these can be found here. Don?t bring pets ? the Portland Farmers Market has outlawed them this year. Don?t try to negotiate ? it?s not a flea market (though I?ve noticed prices sometimes drop at the very end of the day).

Finally, one rule I always follow. Walk the market first, taste what you can, look at what?s available and check the prices. Then go back and do your shopping.

The Accidental Locavore has added more advice. In summary,

  • if lots of people pick up a tomato to see how ripe it is and put it back down, it destroys the cell walls. Stop it!
  • If you taste a berry and like it, take the box you picked the berry from. Don?t refill it from another box.
  • Don?t shuck the damn corn! It not only dries it out at the market, but it will dry further on the trip home.

Their are more items in the full Locavore list here.

To those of you wondering, I?m way behind on putting together the Best Restaurant list. It takes quite a bit of time to visit the restaurants, write up a summary, track down photos and put them all into a post. It doesn?t help that it is perfect hiking weather! I will get it finished as soon as I can. Meanwhile, I?m going to be paying more attention to news ? I?ve been taking a break for months, as after almost 7(!) years of running this blog, I was finding it difficult to get excited about most of these things, and needed a respite. I will also be posting some answers to all the questions I received in the survey, and have a couple of reviews just about read to go. I?ll be doing those much more frequently too.

Signs of Skin Cancer: Biologists Find The Cause Of Pain In The ...

Pain caused by 2 different mechanisms

Apply the ointment, light on, light off - that's how easy it is to cure various forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. However, the majority of patients suffer severe pain during the so-called photodynamic therapy. Why the treatment with ointment and red light can be so painful has now been uncovered by researchers from the RUB. They identified the ion channels involved and signalling molecules secreted by the cancer cells. "The results may provide a starting point for suppressing the pain", says Dr. Ben Novak of the Department of Animal Physiology.

How the photodynamic therapy works

In contrast to normal cells, cancer cells are equipped with different enzymes and have a much higher metabolism. If you apply a molecule called aminolevulinic acid to the skin in the form of a gel, cancer cells take up considerably more of this substance than healthy cells. If aminolevulinic acid accumulates in the cells, the mitochondria - the power plants of the cells - form the molecule protoporphyrin IX. When irradiated with red light, protoporphyrin IX reacts with oxygen. This produces highly reactive oxygen species, free radicals, which destroy the cancer cells. Approximately ten minutes of red light irradiation is sufficient to successfully treat superficial forms of non-melanoma skin cancers such as actinic keratosis. Doctors also remove warts in this way.

Painful therapy

"The catch is: it's terribly painful", says Ben Novak. Forty percent of those treated experience pain during the light irradiation, which they assess on a scale of 0 to 10 (whereby 10 corresponds to an excruciating pain like a heart attack) as 7 to 8. Using injections, like at the dentist, it is possible to numb the nerves involved. "But that also always involves a risk", says the Bochum biologist. The scientists led by the RUB professor Dr. Hermann L?bbert have now solved the mystery as to why the treatment hurts at all.

Pain-sensitive cells in the skin are stimulated

The pain is generated by two mechanisms. In a cell culture experiment, the team showed that not only cancer cells but also pain-sensitive nerve cells in the skin take up aminolevulinic acid - and its derivative methyl aminolevulinic acid - from the ointment. Using calcium imaging, the animal physiologists followed the activity of nerve cells which they had treated with aminolevulinic acid and cells that were not exposed to the substance. Treated nerve cells fired when the researchers exposed them to light. In a living organism, this would mean that the cells would send a pain stimulus to the brain. Without the aminolevulinic acid, the pain-sensitive cells remained inactive under red light. In further experiments, the scientists showed that the activity of the nerve cells is caused by sodium channels and voltage-gated calcium channels in the cell membrane. "A drug that targets these channels would, conceivably, be able to suppress the pain - but that's still in the future", says Ben Novak.

Tumour cells alert nerve cells

L?bbert's team found that pain is generated in the nerve cells themselves, but also in another way. The affected tumour cells secrete a molecule - namely acetylcholine. "This is how they pass the message to other cells: something is wrong, my mitochondria are collapsing right now", Novak illustrates. Acetylcholine acts as a neurotransmitter in the nervous system, where it is harmless. "Previous studies have shown though, that it is very painful when it is injected into the skin". Some of the results have already been published. The researchers are currently preparing the data on the mechanisms of pain generation for publication. This attracted a great deal of interest at the 12th Congress of the European Society for Photodynamic Therapy in Dermatology (Euro-PDT) in Copenhagen in May 2012.
